The 'Clean 15': Fruit & Vegetables You Don't Have to Buy Organic

Filed under: Family Finances, Food & Drink, Health, Shopping, Going Green

As awareness of the dangers of pesticide use has grown, so too has the demand for organic produce. While that's a good thing, organic fruits and vegetables are costlier to grow and two to three times more expensive than conventionally grown produce. But many non-organic fruits and vegetables are grown with significantly lower pesticide loads than others, making them a good choice for anyone on a budget.

So which fruits and veggies are grown with the lowest pesticide loads?

The U.S.-based non-profit consumer organization known as the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has done the legwork for all of us, by crunching data from more than 100,000 pesticide residue reports conducted by the US Department of Agriculture and the US Food and Drug Administration. From that data they identified the 15 cleanest fruits and vegetables, which they call the "Clean 15."

So next time you're in the grocery store, don't worry about putting a few non-organic fruits and veggies in your cart. Check out the gallery to see which ones aren't worth the steep price premium of the organic versions.

How can this be an accurate list, most corn sold in Canada and the US is GMO and is a natural pesticide because Monsanto created that way.
