There are few things people can agree on as readily as what makes a gold digger.

He/she probably has one or more of these going on:

- is dating an extremely rich person
- is dating an extremely old person much older than themselves, who is likely to pass away in short order (hello Anna Nicole Smith)
- proposes marriage, (or is proposed to) in lightning quick time
- goes for broke when negotiating a divorce settlement (hello Heather Mills)

It's a pretty unseemly but undeniably quick way to make money. In fact there's a whole industry in place to help women find rich men (a walking RRSP) and secure their futures using nothing but their charm.

Here's a list of gold diggers who made off with their fortunes after a brief spell as "wife of" or "husband of". What prompted us to do this list? The recent announcement of billionaire investor George Soros' intention to marry his 40-year-old girlfriend, Tomiko Bolton, who's a mere 42 years his junior. So is she or isn't she? Time will tell. It always does.
