The A List: Films That Made the Most Money in 2011

Movies are big business - and in North America we're always happy to head into a dark theatre, especially in the summer.

The projections for the summer 2012 movie season will soon be confirmed as slower than in the past, with box office grosses at US$4.3 billion, compared to last year's US$4.4 billion.

But don't be fooled: there is plenty of money being made, and although media tend to focus on the actors, the teams of people who put together the films are making a few loonies too. (In fact three of the 10 richest celebs last year were directors).

As the Toronto International Film Festival showcases the films that will draw us into theatres this fall, here's the list of movies (and their directors) that made the big bucks in 2011.
