Amid all the glitz of a U.S. Presidential campaign, it's hard to imagine that just a few years ago Barack Obama was firmly entrenched in the American middle class. While he and Michelle provided well for their family, they were by no means wealthy.While it's hard to determine how Mitt Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan earned their money, in contrast, Obama's riches are relatively easy to trace. The Center for Responsive Politics hosts tax returns and personal finance disclosures from a number of politicians, including Barack Obama.

The "Obamas" represent the "Johnny come lately" crowd in every way,
but "classy" the are not!
So Obama earned all the money he has, and invested it in the U.S. (literally, in the case of the U.S. bonds). Romney inherited wealth, made more running a company that liquidated businesses and exported jobs, and put much of his wealth in tax-haven offshore accounts. Which one is the "real American"?
