High school seniors are starting to think about where they want to be come next fall, and many of them have picked trade training courses, colleges or universities as their next steps.Good for them.
Now comes the basic question: where's the money going to come from?
Student loans remain the most popular option. Except: it makes sense to do your homework before you decide. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada has come up with several web pages that offer detailed advice on the topic. Here they are:
- Understanding Student Loans
- Eligibility
- How to Apply
- Provincial and Territorial Student Financial Assistance Offices
- National Student Loans Service Centre: On-Line Services
- Managing your student loan while at school
- Student Financial Assistance Estimator (SFAE) (find out how much you qualify for)
Grants, scholarships and bursaries, another great way to pay for your education. A number of websites help you find available grants, scholarships and awards you can apply for. Do yourself a favor and check them out. You can qualify if you can prove that there's no way for you to afford paying for a school that you to deserve to be in because you've got talent galore. You can also qualify for specialized payments if you want to pursue some specialized education (or if you are, for example, a rugby football player who will easily make the first 15). For that, you would have to prove you qualify because you've got the talent and achievements so far that are simply crying for continued education in a university of your choice.

And then, of course, there are some other better known government programs:
- Registered Education Savings Plans (RESPs)
- Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG)
- Canada Learning Bond (CLB).
Good education is a great starting point in life.
Make sure you get it and don't drown in useless debt.
