Points are an obsession amongst budget-conscious travellers – how to get more and how to use them for the next trip. A recent survey by TD First Class Travel VISA found that 43 per cent of Canadians with travel reward cards have used their points for travel, with 80 per cent of those using it for airfare.

The downside is that the points generally only cover the base price of the tickets or taxes. Twenty per cent of those who responded to the TD survey said that we were unsure what their current credit card covers and would prefer their card cover trip cancellation insurance (56%), travel medical insurance (48%), car rental insurance (46%) and delayed baggage insurance (44%).
TD took this information to heart. With its First Class Travel VISA Infinite card they added in another bonus: their point system can be used to cover flight costs, taxes, surcharges and trip additions, such as spa services or an adventure activity, such as snorkelling. The Travel VISA Infinite card includes medical, trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance and access to over 600 VIP airport lounges around the world through a partnership with Priority Pass.

The cardholder earns three points for every $1.00 spent; a minimum of 10,000 points is needed to book a reward, and there are no blackout dates or airline restrictions. Upon approval, you'll receive a signing bonus of 20,000 points. And they'll look the other way if you're walking up the street from another bank: you don't have to be a current TD customer to qualify.
