How to Have a Fun and Frugal Long Weekend

Not going away for the long weekend but don't want to stay home? You're not condemned to sitting in front of your television watching bad movies. You can have fun without breaking the bank.

All it takes is a little research and initiative and soon you'll be having a great (and inexpensive) time.

Free is always good
Explore the beaches, lakes and parks in your neighbourhood. Pack a picnic lunch and head down early for a day of relaxing. These locations often have playgrounds or sports equipment so you can enjoy an impromptu game of volleyball or your kids can play on the swing set.

If you're looking to save costs on entertainment, pick up a copy of your free newspaper. From intimate musical events to art shows, the paper will have many listings for free (or cheap) shows this weekend. You'll be surprised at how many affordable events take place in your area. And, if you've always wanted to write the Great Canadian Novel, you can enter the 3-day novel writing contest - it's been a Labour Day literary tradition since 1977!

Play tourist in your hometown
This long weekend is going to give you a lot of time so why not play tourist? Go to your city's web site and check out the tourist information. Make a list of events or locations recommended for tourists and visit a few. Keep in mind that the bigger tourist attractions tend to be more expensive, so if you're on a budget, try the smaller locations. They're often cheaper or just require a minimum donation from visitors.

The long weekend is also a great time to visit all those cute and quirky stores that you always wanted to visit but never find the time.

Coupons, coupons, coupons (and points)
With a little legwork you can save money and still visit your city's top attractions. All you need is time and your computer. If you're interested in taking your children to the zoo, then visit the zoo's web site. Often you will find the zoo offering a special deal to encourage visits during the long weekend. If you collect Air Miles and you have enough points, you can redeem some of them for events, attractions and movies in your area. Frequent visitor to a location? See if they have a frequent visitor's pass - it's often cheaper than buying a ticket every time.
