The Best Part Time Jobs for Students
Filed under: Budgeting & Planning, Employment & Careers, Back to School

How does one make some money and not have to call the parents for a loan? For university students, there are more options to make an extra dollar to keep a bank account in the black instead of the red.
Start with the tried and true – Kijiji and Craiglist. Both offer an updated list of part-time and casual job opportunities in towns and cities across Canada that can fit into a student schedule. Students can also list their services – from tutoring to yard work, there are many people looking for help around the house.
But, both have their downsides – with some listed jobs paying very little or are offering work experience and not any payment. Both sites are trying to keep scammers off their websites, but students need to be vigilant about any job that sounds too good to be true.
Students should definitely consider the on-campus job board – not just for businesses who are close to campus, but for positions on campus, working for various departments or via on-campus amenities such as the restaurants or multi-use facilities which may need students for security, service or organizational work on a part-time or casual basis.
For those who want to look for a job that can take them one step closer to their chosen career, one Canadian site is offering a helping hand: Talentegg. This website was created for university students and recent graduates to find jobs that can help fulfill a career path, whether it's a full-time position or internship, part-time or summer job.
The site provides job listings as well as a Career Incubator, which offers articles and videos on a variety of topics including the benefits of blogging, career competitions, student debt and Q&As with successful people.
For students who want to make cold hard cash - the five best jobs to earn money with some possible benefits:
- Restaurant/bar /club– whether on or off-campus, the hourly wage may not be much, but the tips will add up if you're quick and attentive as a server or bartender, with cash in the pocket at the end of a shift.
- Clothing retail – for the fashionista, it helps to be able to get a steep discount on clothing and accessories while store schedules can be amenable to the student life.
- Gym/health club – schedules can work for students and provide a healthy outlet for school stresses as well as a regular wage in the pocket.
- Arena/event spaces – always need part-time help for major productions, concerts, parties and fundraisers and can offer you up some free entertainment while you work.
- Teaching – whether it's tutoring a highschool student in algebra, showing a 10-year-old how to play the piano or helping a new immigrant learn English, these jobs can be a career builder and a steady income.
