Holiday party season is heating up and you don't want to go empty handed when you're invited to one. Still, the holiday budget is getting stretched pretty thin, so what to do? Not to worry, you can still wow your hostess with these gifts from the dollar store.
Two wine glasses, cocktail napkins and chocolates or fancy cookies on a tray, makes a lovely and useful gift for a host or hostess. Add a shiny ornament, if you wish, to add a little holiday sparkle and cover with basket wrap.
If you usually buy assorted nuts in the shell at Christmas time, put some in a small shallow rectangular bowl with nut cracker on top. Use a patterned candy bag to wrap and voila! It's compact and party-ready.
Dollar stores have lots of colorful tea towels on hand. Pack two of these with some hand soap in a pump bottle for a very practical gift. Right now Dollarama has cute Christmas character hand soap bottles. There's a polar bear, a penguin and a snowman for $1.50 each. Pair one with a couple of Christmas kitchen towels. Either of these ideas will cost you under $4.
Dollarama has a beautifully packaged set of Ivy & Castle hand lotion and hand soap in 9 oz. pump bottles that would make a nice hostess gift on their own for $2. If you wish, add a tea towel for a buck.
A large bag of potpourri packaged with a clear glass vase would make a nice hostess gift that will only cost you $4 at the dollar store.
There's a boxed melamine cake plate with a matching server in beautiful Christmas patterns for $2. Or, how about a glass Christmas cutting board that can also be used as a hot plate or a serving tray? I've seen these 14 1/2 inch x 10 1/2 inch cutting boards in Zellers and Wal-mart for over $4 but you can buy one at Dollarama for $2.
If you are taking your hostess flowers, supply the vase as well, so she doesn't have to look for one in the middle of her hosting duties. Dollar stores have a wide assortment to choose from and it will only cost you $2 or less, depending on the size you need.
Bringing wine? Choose from among the attractive wooden boxes and cloth wine bags at the dollar store and your host will be able to reuse it the next time he brings wine to a party.
