Five Emergency Gifts to Keep on Hand

I've always envied those people who are expert gift givers – those who can find the perfect gift every time, no matter if its for Uncle Joe or cousin Katie. And these 'experts' are also who I've learned from that having a few extra items on hand is just as necessary as extra rolls of toilet paper.
Having a stash of gifts that can be given to anyone, whether it's a relative or a stranger, man or woman, can alleviate stress during the busy holiday party season, when taking time out to get an extra gift can be an overwhelming prospect in an already busy schedule.

From playing Secret Santa at the office or for a last minute invite to a holiday dinner party, here are five options that will be welcomed by anyone this holiday season:
Food - Whether it's savoury or sweet, nibbles are always welcome – a few truffles, a favourite jam or a cache of cookies, are easily found and affordable. Gourmet pre-packaged cookie or muffin mixes can also be a good stocking stuffer.
Drink – It's smart to keep a stash of wine or sparkling wine during the holiday season for home entertaining, and an extra bottle is a perfect present for a host or hostess. For those who don't imbibe, coffee or tea will be a welcome addition to any pantry.
Notebook – Whether it's a reminder for shopping, a spot to jot down something that pops into your mind, or a place to write down the name of that cool new boutique, this useful gift comes in handy despite the current obsession with handheld devices.
Picture Frame – A simple 4x6 black or silver frame works well for a favourite travel photo or a showcase for the family pet's latest adventure – and a good excuse to encourage someone to print a photograph from the digital archive.
Winter accessories – A pair of gloves, a toque or earmuffs in neutral shades like black, gray or navy will always be useful and happily received by any Canadian this winter.

For an emergency gift .. on the occasion that a friend drops by over Christmas bearing a small gift for me, unexpectedly, what I do is buy maybe four bottles of wine and wrap them in colorful paper with no label on it...then when they are leaving I hand it to them...if all that doesn't happen it is no loss as they can go into my wine rack.
