Just in Time for Christmas: Gift Cards at Dollarama
Filed under: Economizer, Shopping, Holidays
Giving gift cards instead of gifts has gained in popularity over the years. A gift card allows a hard-to-buy-for recipient to choose exactly what they would like and takes the pressure off of the giver.
While dollar stores in the States have had gift cards on offer for years, the new Dollarama gift cards are, as far as I know, the first of their kind here.
I asked Lyla Redmanovich, Public Relations for Dollarama, about this latest innovation from Canada's number one dollar store.
"The gift cards are considered an inexpensive, low-risk addition to the store. They don`t expect any major profits from them," she said, "It`s just something that shoppers had expressed an interest in and they (Dollarama) considered the idea long overdue."
Since Dollar Tree, a major player in the States, arrived in Canada last year, I couldn't help wondering if the addition of gift cards was an effort on Dollarama's part to stay competitive. I asked Ms. Redmanovich if that was the case and received a very decisive "No," in response.
Dollar Tree, which has had gift cards available for years, also has on-line shopping and store flyers. When asked about any such plans in the works for Dollarama's future, Ms. Redmanovich again answered in the negative.
Dollarama gift cards come in $10, $25 and $50 denominations. Perhaps you won't want to give a dollar store gift card to your well-heeled Aunt Tilly, but they're perfect for people like me who love the craft, decor and everyday household items they find at Dollarama.
If you are given a Dollarama gift card, the website homepage has a feature that lets you check the balance left on it.

These ARE low risk for the store, and VERY high risk for consumers. I bought one for Christmas and now I just found out that it was NOT activated. When this was brought to the attention of the store manager, he seemed VERY disinterested in fixing the situation. The store manager claimed that all the records are not kept on site so he could not check his records I have to go through customer complaint line. The customer complaint line just has a recording saying that they will call back. We will see.
