When you think of hardware, dollar stores may not be your first thought but they do have a surprisingly wide selection of well-made smaller things that you might use around the house so, it's definitely worth a look. Here are just some of the ways you can save money on hardware items by shopping at the dollar store.
A simple night light costs $3.09 at Canadian Tire but only a $1.25 at Dollarama.

Various shapes of felt protectors for furniture legs cost $1 per set at the dollar store. At Canadian Tire these felt protectors cost $2.99 per package. To me, it doesn't make any sense to pay almost $2 more for essentially the same thing.
Sturdy metal padlocks in a variety of sizes can be found in Dollarama's hardware aisle. For price comparison, I found a weather resistant padlock at Canadian Tire that cost $11.99. A waterproof padlock at Dollarama that's a comparable size, is only $2.
A package of two screw-in door stoppers at Dollarama, costs $2. Similar door stoppers at the hardware store cost $4.29 for two.
Small metal knob-type door pulls come in packages of two at the dollar store and cost $1.50. A single door pull of the same size costs $1.33 at Canadian tire, so a pair would cost $2.66 and that's at a clearance price.
Full-sized plungers at Dollarama only cost $1.25 and have improved considerably since the more flimsy ones that first made an appearance in their stores. The current model has substantially thicker rubber than its predecessor, giving it a much better chance of getting the job done. A plunger from Canadian Tire will cost you $4.49.
Dollarama has metal hooks that you can't tell apart from some of the ones at Canadian Tire. There's everything from cup hooks to brass coat hooks to hooks for the garden shed or garage that are sturdy enough to hold bikes and ladders. Prices range from a buck to two bucks, so why not try to find what you need at the dollar store before looking elsewhere?
I've always liked the quality of the tools at Dollarama. Most are well-made, great for small jobs around the house and cost a lot less than similar ones found at Canadian Tire. Read more about dollar store tools here.
