Go On, She Deserves It: Mother's Day Gift Ideas for Under $50

With Mother's Day approaching, I find myself shamelessly
hinting to my husband and kids about what they can treat me to that will show their appreciation for me simply being the Mom of the family. I have to admit, Mother's Day is one of those occasions when I actually do feel like I deserve a bit of pampering or a thoughtful gift for the many sleep deprived nights I've experienced -- not to mention the many diapers I've changed and seemingly endless clean-up tasks I've endured. For anyone looking for gift ideas to appreciate all that Mom has done for you, here is some guidance on what Moms really want. In the under $50 range, you can actually go quite far with your money.
Pamper her with a pedicure or manicure or both
Depending on what spa or nail salon she goes to, you can treat your mother to a pedicure or manicure or both for under $50 in most major cities. Or, buy her a Spa gift certificate in that price range and it can go towards a service she chooses like a relaxing massage or facial.
Give her a fresh new scent and lip colour
You can't go wrong giving Mom a new lip colour to compliment her spring/summer wardrobe, and there are many lovely pink and orange/red hues to choose from, depending on her complexion.
As for perfume, I'm especially fond of the rollerball style many brands are releasing now, usually for around $25. Hit the perfume and makeup counters at Sephora or The Bay where you'll have more of a selection of scents, colours and styles. The Michael Kors lip gloss/rollerball eau de parfum duo would suit me just fine -- it serves two purposes and fits in your purse. Twirl by Kate Spade is also a refreshing scent that comes in a compact tiny tube.
Shower her with jewels
More is more this spring when it comes to jewelry and it's likely Mom doesn't have time to shop around for the latest in chandelier earrings or chunky bracelets.
Most popular retailers now carry jewelry -- H&M and Banana Republic have a good selection of trendy bracelets and earring for under $50. If you're looking for something fun but a bit different, try Stella & Dot (stelladot.com).
Make a recipe from a cookbook and present both (the meal and the book) to her
There's nothing that feels better than being relieved from dinner duty. Cook up a recipe you get from a great cookbook and then give the book to her after your whole family enjoys the (no doubt) fabulous feast you've made. I would recommend a classic like the Silver Platter Cookbook 25th Anniversary Edition (for $16.46 at Indigo.ca) or Martha Stewart's Dinner at Home ($28.38 at Indigo.ca) for easy recipes.
Wine or beer and you're in the clear
If Mom likes her vino (if she has preschool children it's likely she does or would happily be introduced to it), then get yourself to a liquor store and treat her to a fabulous bottle to pair with that fabulous meal you're making.
If she's more of a beer snob, make sure you have her favourite brew chilled in the fridge or get a sampler package from a brewery or beer store and have a tasting.
