travel amusements for less at the dollar storePlanning a trip this summer? Don't blow a chunk of your vacation budget on toys and snacks at an airport gift shop. Save your hard-earned cash for spending at your destination by stocking up on snacks, toys and other trip diversions at the dollar store.

One quick stop will net you everything you could possibly need to amuse the kids, as well as yourself, for hours, whether you're traveling by plane, train or automobile.Gum, chips and other snacks - You can get two individual bags of Cheetos or Lays potato chips for only a buck or opt for some trail mix, granola bars or Planters peanuts. And while you're at it, a box of individually wrapped moist wipes would probably be a good idea for wiping sticky fingers and faces afterward. A box of 24 wipes is a buck at Dollarama.

Gum is always a good thing to have on hand for air travel. A package of Extra or Trident sugarless gum is only $1 at Dollarama.

Coloring books and crayons - A time-honored way to amuse kids, coloring books are a lot cheaper at dollar stores than anywhere else and you can still find their favorite cartoon characters, if that's what they like.

Travel-sized games - Maybe your kids have electronic games they tote around with them everywhere but that doesn't mean they wouldn't enjoy a shared game of Chinese checkers or snakes and ladders for a change. I saw some travel-sized versions of these and other popular games at Dollar Tree for $1.25 each, so you might want to pick up one or two for your trip.

puzzle books - Whether you're into Sudoku, word search or crosswords, Dollarama has them all and they're only a buck each. And don't forget to pick up some extra pencils to pack in your purse or carry on. These things have a way of going missing from time to time, especially when you're traveling from place to place.
