Summer Entertainment - Does It Have to Cost a Lot? (part two)

Filed under: Budgeting & Planning, Family Finances

Summer is the time to have fun with family and friends and to get out and explore.

But summer can be expensive - and for those of us who want to avoid overspending, it's good to remember that having fun doesn't have to cost big bucks.

One of the favourite summertime activities is taking in some live music performances - especially outdoors. There are options to see favourite touring acts as well as annual festivals - but unfortunately both of these are big bucks - so how to find something that fits the budget needs?Whether you live in a small town or a big city, summer is all about festivals - and many offer free admission, as well as several free options. You may not get to see the favourite act of the summer, but here's some tips to find the free music in your 'hood:

1. If you're committed to seeing the hot act of the summer but don't have the money - enter the contest; Via radio, Facebook or Twitter, there's sure to be some way to win tickets to the local show.

2. Music festivals - many festivals offer several things for free in addition to paid admission. For example NXNE in Toronto is a multi-night festival with entry to shows by paid wristband or nightly admission, but also sponsored a free show for fans too.

3. Local festivals - whether its art, culture or sports, there's always the opportunity to hear some music for free. Check local entertainment listings for options that won't cost a cent.

4. Cottage dwellers - heading to the cabin or cottage doesn't have to mean a lack of entertainment. Consider the local pub or small town weekend options - with all those extra folks around, there's bound to be some fun options this summer.
