Hello? Operator? Phone Income Tax Filings Gone With TELEFILE's Departure
Filed under: Saving, Technology, Taxes, Tax Basics Video
It sounded good while it lasted, but alas, no more: taxpayers who used their phones to file their tax
returns will no longer have the option. It's the typical out with the old – in with the new: the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is closing its TELEFILE service.
Electronic services have been becoming much more popular in recent years, and TELEFILE's numbers have been going down.
Numbers don't lie, says the agency: between 2011 and 2012, use of the service declined by 12.3 per cent.
As the CRA is concerned, it's all about numbers. According to the agency, out of 25.4 million returns received thus far, only 1.2 per cent of all tax returns are filed using TELEFILE compared to the 66 per cent of Canadian taxpayers who opted to file their returns electronically, either on their own or with the help of a tax preparer.
Adding to TELEFILE's decline in popularity are the slew of companies that offer helpful software. There's a catch though: only software certified by the agency will do. No worries, though: a software list that includes even some applications featuring the unbeatable price of $0.00 will help you find an application that suits you and your needs best.
To make things even easier, the CRA provides a service known as My Payment. It lets you make one or more payments in one simple online transaction. Of course, you'll need online access to your bank account (or accounts) to be able to use this feature.
And for the those who are web-savvy but reluctant to join the realm of financial transactions using web tools, the agency has got a page for the timid, too.
