Five Money Saving Tips For Summer
Filed under: Food & Drink, House & Home, Saving
The precious summer months aren't known as a time to save money.Summer equals vacation time, blockbuster movie nights and going to amusement parks. It's not about putting money in a jar to save for a rainy day.
But there are opportunities to do things that can help save money - especially around the house where costs can be reduced with a bit of planning.
Here are some tips that work especially well in summer, and can keep more loonies and toonies in the pocket for ice cream and other summertime indulgences.
1. Upgrade the thermostat - a programmable thermostat will monitor temperature more accurately, and will save you money. Put it on a cycle that turns down the AC when you're not in the house and overnight so those constant blasts of cold air aren't going 24/7.
2. Cook outside - using the barbecue and considering dishes that don't require the stove or oven will reduce heat and time. Plus, fruit and vegetables easily eaten raw are more affordable than meat that needs to be cooked - try a meatless supper option.
3. Hang up a line - not for games, but for laundry. Use the power of the sun to dry those clothes and let the dryer have the summer off. Reduce electricity use and avoid being trapped in the laundry room.
4. End of season - as back to school and early Fall items come into the stores, look for reduced prices on summer clothing, games and other accessories. These items can still be used into the fall, and others can be put away for next year's enjoyment.
5. Plant a garden - reduce food bills and enhance the table with vegetable or fruit grown in your own backyard. There's an initial investment, but once those tomatoes and zucchini start ripening, everyone will be at your back gate.
