I cheered for the Los Angeles Kings in 1993. It was the year the Maple Leafs were supposed to win the Cup. Doug Gilmour appeared to have the will all his own to haul Toronto out of the cell of infamy they had been trapped in since last capturing a championship in 1967.

The team's captain set Toronto club records for points and assists in a season, was nominated for the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP, and won the Selke Trophy as the league's top defensive forward. As the playoffs progressed and the Leafs took on the guise of a team destined to end a quarter-century of disaster, the city became a torrent of energy and enthusiasm. Everyone had a story about the run to the NHL semi-finals, whether it was a pair of tickets scored at the last minute or a serendipitous encounter with Wendel Clark outside of Maple Leaf Gardens.

The good news for Canada's four playoff-bound NHL teams is they are guaranteed to have a second-round presence. That's because the Ottawa Senators will face the Montreal Canadiens in the opening round, a matchup that came as a result of Ottawa's 3-2 victory over Boston on Sunday night in the league's final game of the regular season.
Continue reading NHL Playoffs Odds for Canada's Teams

NHL Playoffs Odds for Canada's Teams originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Sun, 28 Apr 2013 23:07:00 EST. When the Toronto Blue Jays placed Jose Reyes on the disabled list on Saturday, they not only put a lot of hits and stolen bases on the shelf but a ton of cash as well.

Reyes is the most expensive member of a very pricey roster. The All-Star shortstop acquired in an off-season trade with the Miami Marlins is making an average of $17.7 million (all figures U.S.) on a six-year contract that expires in 2018.

The only other Blue Jays whose salaries average more than $10 million are left-handed starting pitcher Mark Buehrle ($14.5 million) and right-fielder Jose Bautista ($13 million), according to Major League Baseball.

For 2013, Bautista leads the team in salary with $14 million while right-handed starter Josh Johnson, also obtained in the blockbuster deal with the Marlins, is making $13.75 million. Buehrle will earn $13 million this year and Reyes, who was hurt Friday night in Kansas City while sliding awkwardly into second base, will collect $10 million. As a team, the Jays rank 10th in salary for 2013, with the roster making $117,035,100.

Interestingly, outgoing Rogers CEO Nadir Mohamed earns $5.6 million, which would make him only the eighth-highest-paid Blue Jay. Rogers owns the team that entered the 2013 season as one of the favourites to win the World Series.

Don't feel Mohamed is getting a bad deal, though. Last month Rogers released documents that showed Mohamed will receive an $18.5-million package when he retires in 2014.
As Opening Day arrives, the Toronto Blue Jays are in a position they haven't been for two decades: They enter the baseball season as World Series favourites. The addition of three elite starting pitchers - Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey, Mark Buehrle and Josh Johnson - as well as All-Star position players Jose Reyes and Melky Cabrera ensure the Blue Jays will be one of the most exciting teams to watch in 2013. The offseason moves have rekindled thoughts of the feats former general manager Pat Gillick pulled off in the early 1990s. Whether this team can bring the glory days of 1992-93 back to Toronto will not be revealed for months. For now, what we do know is the electricity that has been absent during the past 20 years - as the Jays have failed to come within even a warning-track flyball of the postseason - will be back. They are going to be competitive. Game days will be exciting, bars and restaurants will be full, hotels will enjoy a boost with visitors coming in to see the hottest show in town.

If you're going to see a game, here are five tips to save you money and help you get the most out of the Blue Jays' experience:

A senior financial planner with a proven track record, Koskina has plenty of knowledge to impart to existing and prospective clients, especially in the midst of RRSP season. She offers these three tips for making the most of your registered retirement savings plan.
Continue reading How to Make the Most of Your RRSP Contributions

How to Make the Most of Your RRSP Contributions originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Wed, 06 Feb 2013 10:00:00 EST.
"When we talk RRSP, they are the ones who should really be doing their RRSPs, because of their tax bracket," Koskina says of the teachers, whose income would be taxed at well over 40 per cent without a contribution in a registered retirement savings plan. "Instead, he's making $100,000, she's making $90,000, but they have no money to invest and that's because of inappropriate investing and poor debt planning."
Koskina consults for Investors Group Financial Services, the largest financial planning company in Canada, with more than 1 million clients, and the first pioneer of mutual funds in the nation. The number one mistake she sees Canadians making is failing to put money into their RRSP accounts. A Royal Bank of Canada report last week showed Canadians are investing into RRSP accounts at such a low rate, the contribution amount will fall below 2 per cent of disposable income by 2017 - a level not seen since the 1970s.
Continue reading Avoid These RRSP Mistakes

Avoid These RRSP Mistakes originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Tue, 29 Jan 2013 11:30:00 EST.
A generation ago, you were told to never leave home without your desired credit card. In the 21st century, you don't go on the road without a stash of travel apps at your fingertips. Apps are most often seen as tools to keep you organized (such as Apple's Passbook) or resources to keep you on track while in your destination (like city guide apps). Savvy travellers, however, are also taking advantage of apps and websites that can save you money while you plan your trip and when you're already on the road. Here are five travel apps to add to your smartphone (all are free and available on iPhone and Android devices like Google Play), and five websites we find indispensible when planning our next trips.
So, rather than lament living in a cold climate, why not embrace it?

To make the best of what Canadian winters have to offer, take advantage of these free or inexpensive activities that just may make you appreciate those below-zero temperatures a little bit. And who knows: you might fall in love with winter if you give it a chance!
The question heading into Black Friday is not whether Canadians will save money shopping, but if they'll be going over the border to do it. Last November, 4.2 million Canadians hopped over to the United States, many of them to take advantage of post-Thanksgiving Day deals.

Since 2007, Canadians have been travelling to the U.S. in November in increasing numbers. But in 2012 there may be a change. For one thing, more Canadian retailers are offering deep discounts to compete with their U.S. counterparts. This year has also seen the introduction of more U.S.-based stores across Canada, including the first Marshall's franchises, the discount clothing retailer that opened in Toronto this summer. While the prices at those stores are still higher than in the U.S., their arrival brings more choice as well as more Black Friday-related marketing initiatives aimed at keeping Canadians - and their money - closer to home.
Brenna Donoghue has always wanted to influence positive social change on a global basis and at one time felt the way to do so was through charitable organizations. A Canadian, Donoghue worked in the charity sector for a few years promoting economic growth and sustainable businesses in Africa, but found change was happening much too slowly for her and some of her colleagues. So, two years ago, they decided to shift to private enterprise, founding Ethical Ocean, an online retailer that sells only sustainable products manufactured by individuals or communities in the developing world.
"There are a lot of great products out there that support fair trade or sustainability and we wanted to create a marketplace that brought these products together and reflect the values of the people who made them," Donoghue said.
Continue reading New Online Shop Sells Sustainable Products from the Developing World

New Online Shop Sells Sustainable Products from the Developing World originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Wed, 15 Aug 2012 13:47:00 EST. Canadian basketball fans are just as caught up in March Madness as those who are crazy about the US college game south of the border. Here are the five cities in this nation where hoops junkies should feel most at home as they prepare for the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

%Gallery-150563%

	1. Toronto - Not only is Toronto home to Canada's only NBA team, but it delivers top-flight talent to the NCAA Tournament each year. The city's playgrounds and high schools are filled with emerging stars and exciting pick-up games. Some of the country's best sports bars, including Real Sports Bar & Grill and the Ballroom, are in downtown Toronto, and they will be packed with hoops fans throughout March Madness. Toronto also has lots of basketball-related history, having hosted the first NBA game in 1946.

	2. Almonte, Ontario - Before he invented the game in Springfield, Massachusetts, James Naismith acquired his love for sports and competition in his hometown near Ottawa. You can visit the Naismith Museum in the nation's capital and a statue of Naismith in Almonte, which unveiled the attraction on July 23, 2011 - complete with peach basket.

	3. Montreal - After leaving Almonte, Naismith went to McGill University and 10 of its students would later participate in the first organized basketball game in Springfield. Montreal remains a hot bed for this nation's basketball talent and many Canadian fans will cheer for Kris Joseph, the star of No. 1-seeded Syracuse and an NBA prospect who hails from Quebec's largest city.

	4. Edmonton - We've all heard about the Harlem Globetrotters, but do you know about the Edmonton Commercial Graduates? This team of Canadian women won 147 straight games and had an overall record of 502-20 during their 25-year history early in the 20th century. Theirs is one of the great sports legacies in the City of Champions.

	5. Victoria - The British Columbia capital is home to this nation's greatest basketball player, Steve Nash. The two-time NBA MVP, who was born in South Africa, went to university at Santa Clara in California, where he led the Broncos to three NCAA Tournament appearances. In Victoria, Steve Nash Youth Basketball is developing the next generation of hoops players and spreading love of the game on the west coast.

5 Cities in Canada to Enjoy March Madness originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Mon, 12 Mar 2012 15:21:00 EST. Museums and resource centres across Canada have plenty on the go for kids during March Break, including many activities that will teach them about art and culture. Here are five museums in Canada that offer great activities for kids during this month's prolonged recess for school:

%Gallery-149590%

Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto - With loads of programs, the AGO keeps kids entertained from March 12-16. Activities include a hands-on learning centre, a series of "Tin Tin" episodes to watch, a room where kids can build their own "sculpture garden" using soft plush pieces and family-friendly tours of the galleries.

Diefenbunker, Ottawa - If your kid has dreams of being James Bond - or Austin Powers - then the Diefenbunker Spy Camp is for him, or her. Kids will learn the art of espionage, which some parents may not be too keen about, but it's all in good fun. The Diefenbunker, so-named because it was a secret Cold War facility created during John Diefenbaker's administration, features lots of history as well as this unique experience. Kids will create a disguise for going undercover, make and break codes, and configure spy gadgets, among other things. The week-long camp ($225 per child) runs from March 12-16 and is for ages 7-12.

Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Halifax - Sculpture, mixed-media and traditional painting are among the skills kids can learn from professional artists at this gallery. Classes run from March 10-18 with full-day ($250) and half-day ($125) sessions available.

Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal - This fantastic museum has a 2-for-1 admission special during March Break to the special exhibit called "Feininger the Great Carnival," in which the work of Lyonel Feininger is explored. But what makes the Montreal Musem of Fine Arts special is its devotion to Canadian art, as best illustrated in the newly opened Claire and Marc Bourgie Pavilion of Quebec and Canadian Art. For older kids, the museum offers a cultural insight into Canada that they may appreciate if they're keen on art or the nation's history.

TheMuseum, Kitchener, Ont. - Hockey, art and skill development are all rolled into one fun package in this museum an hour southwest of Toronto. "Arena" features art work that comments on the national pastime as well as celebrates it. There are fun interactive displays and excellent art, including hockey masks from Wanda Koop that resemble tribal paintings and Graeme Patterson's mesmerizing stop-animation film featuring Darryl Sittler's famed 10-Point Game. The Canada-Russia Summit Series documentary will transfix parents. It runs continuously on the museum's top floor. With this being the 40th anniversary of the Summit Series, the memories are even more poignant for some. "Arena" runs until May 6 at TheMuseum.

His quest for zero has made Mike Brigham No. 1. Brigham recently became the first owner of a Chevrolet Volt that significantly lowers its carbon footprint through a partnership agreement with a Canadian-based renewable energy company.

For a $198 option, the Volt can be upgraded to a Bullfrog Power-branded model that gives environmentally conscious owners the added benefit of seeing their power usage replenished into the electricity grid through the form of clean, renewable energy.

"I've been researching this vehicle for years," said Brigham, who is in the renewable energy industry and endeavours to live a life where he has a carbon footprint of nil. This month, he hosted a launch of the Bullfrog Power Volt at his home in The Beach area of Toronto. "I had been driving a Prius for 11 years but always wanted an electric vehicle for the energy benefits and because they are so much more fun to drive."
Continue reading Chevy Volt Gets an Added Bolt of Canadian Green

Chevy Volt Gets an Added Bolt of Canadian Green originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Wed, 22 Feb 2012 10:00:00 EST. For more than 10 years I have owned two timeshare properties, paying roughly $11,000 for each of them. One of them, The Manhattan Club in New York, is under a class-action lawsuit because owners like myself are fed up with obscene maintenance fees and the inability to book when we want to stay. The second one, Silver Lake in Orlando, Fla., is a place that I've never visited, choosing instead to use the points for exchanges into other properties in the RCI timeshare network. Its maintenance fees have also increased every year since I've owned it. Many timeshare owners lament their purchases for one reason or another. If you've been invited to a timeshare presentation, here are five things to keep in mind when you're confronted with the hard sell that you will surely face.
Continue reading 5 Reasons You Should Not Buy a Timeshare (From An Owner Who's Been There)

5 Reasons You Should Not Buy a Timeshare (From An Owner Who's Been There) originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Thu, 26 Jan 2012 09:00:00 EST. From making the most of public transit when you travel to knowing the exact day and time to look for the best flight deals, these tips are sure to leave more money in your pockets this year. Click on the photo above to launch the gallery, or read the story below.
1. Book your vacation early. It's odd how we can procrastinate over the things we're most excited about - like our travels. Often, people make the mistake of deliberating too long over when they'll take their vacation time. What happens is they end up losing out on the choice weeks to travel and possibly hurting their pocketbook too. If you've got three weeks of vacation at your job, book off two of them as early as possible and save the third for last-minute getaway weekends or emergencies. With the two you book, know early in the year where you'd like to go. If you want to go to Chicago, head there with that week of vacay you booked in April and start looking now for hotels and flights. If you book a week off in October for your birthday and you aren't sure if you'd like to celebrate it in Shanghai or Maui, take a few weeks to research your options, but do so with the peace of mind of knowing you'll be blowing out the candles in style in 2012.
Continue reading 5 Tips for Canadians to Save Money When They Travel

5 Tips for Canadians to Save Money When They Travel originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 12:00:00 EST.
