How to Save on Christmas? Celebrate a Few Days Later

Filed under: Economizer, Family Finances, Holidays, New Year New Start

Christmas GiftsWe liked this Washington Post article so much, we decided to link to it, and follow it with a few riffs of our own.

The idea is simple: instead of spending lots on gifts and ensuring they're under the tree on Christmas morn, why not delay the gratification a few days and hit the post-holiday sales?

You can manage this creatively by:
  • Buying gift cards for favourite stores you know will be having Boxing Day sales
  • Leaving a note from Santa (beside a small gift) saying that he got delayed but will be coming by to give your mom and dad a big cheque to take you shopping with
  • Spending Christmas Day away from your extended family and friends, and arranging to meet up during the holidays to exchange presents

The Economics of Breastfeeding

Filed under: Budgeting & Planning, Economizer, Family Finances

You might wonder why WalletPop would post a story about breastfeeding, but there's a simple explanation. Not only is breastfeeding healthier for both mother and baby, it's a lot easier on the pocketbook as well.

The topic comes up regularly during World Breastfeeding Week, which this year runs from Aug 1 - 8. Last year, a report by the City of Toronto's health department revealed that 40% of new parents leaving local hospitals are given baby formula to take home with them - whether they need it or not. A local MD and advocate of breastfeeding told CBC radio there are several reasons for breastfeeding an infant. Not only is mother's milk more nutritionally sound for the baby, but moms who nurse their babies have a lower rate of breast cancer as well. It's also more convenient than having to prepare bottles, and allows for mother-baby bonding that is beneficial for both. The doctor also mentioned that immigrant women are less likely to breastfeed as are low-income women. Yet to my surprise he didn't mention the cost factor. And the cost is considerable.

Having Trouble Using Reward Miles? New Ways to Spend Them

You can use your aeroplan miles to purchase a number of different items, some of them collectible, like this signed Sidney Crosby magazine cover.
I've always found it difficult to use air miles for actual air travel – no matter which airline's program I'm collecting them with. Invariably by the time I have my eureka moment and want to book a flight, the miles or points required have skyrocketed, and I'm left thinking, "Next time I'll get it together sooner..."

But there's more than one way to spend those miles, and it doesn't always have to be on flights.

I confess I'd never looked at the online catalogue of rewards on the Aeroplan site before, but I'm wiser now, and can share some of the more surprising items you can purchase with your miles.

A Job That'll Take You Places: Executive Chef Wanted... in Antarctica

Filed under: Employment & Careers, Weird & Wonderful

a chef job in antarctica awaits the right personIf you have the skills - and the fortitude to withstand a climate as frosty as Gordon Ramsay - you can be running a kitchen close to the South Pole, at McMurdo Station. Yup, in Antarctica - that broad swath of remote, frozen ice - where a job with the US Antarctic Program awaits the right person. No joke - just check out the job ad on Craigslist or head directly to Akmaaq and apply there.

So it's not the first place most trained chefs would think of, when taking up a new post. But it could yield some interesting menu choices, particularly if the 100-mile menu was your thing.

While we applaud any takers, there are hundreds of other jobs you can run away to. Check out our gallery below and see what we mean.

justin bieberReality TV star Paris Hilton has made her latest stunning revelation – and, no, it doesn't involve photos of herself or any homemade videos.

The celebrity heiress actually revealed during an interview on CNN with Piers Morgan that she makes more than $10 million a year from selling 17 different product lines – everything from handbags and sunglasses to pet supplies.

While 10 million bucks may seem like an eye-popping figure, many celebrities, including Justin Bieber and Maria Sharapova, actually pull down even bigger fortunes by hawking various products and services.

Here's a run-down of seven other actors, athletes, singers and entertainers who sell an eclectic array of merchandise and consumer goods to beef up their bank accounts.
