It seems everyone out there is working to rack their debt up to record levels lately. With that development, we're also starting to see a boom in the number of debt settlement companies hanging out a shingle in an effort to attract new customers.

Those working in credit counselor positions say their service is primarily about financial rehabilitation, not the quick fix being promoted by a lot of new debt settlement companies operating in Canada. In reality, the "solutions" promoted by debt settlement organizations, often require you to push your accounts into default before settling. The process isn't a quick one and, arguably, it isn't much of a fix either.
For anyone mired or wallowing in a debt hole though, such advice sounds trite, almost laughable and easily dismissed.

There are a number of ways people get stuck in this murk. Put aside for a minute that a huge amount of revolving credit is made readily available to virtually every member of society (it's not all that difficult to find stories about companies accidentally issuing platinum credit cards to babies, deceased grandmothers and the family dog). Sometimes it's the simple and unfortunate life events, those which can happen to just about anyone, that drive a lot of people into positions where they need help.

Given how widespread the problem is, it's not all that surprising to see a whole industry of debt settlement specialists springing up online, on the airways and in advertising just about everywhere you turn.

Some of these companies are legit but a lot of them are predatory too, promising to dispense with a would-be clients' debt in a very short time, usually for a fraction of what's owed.

Do you have resolutions? Do they involve hauling yourself to the gym? Have you been yet this month? If not, save the money you might otherwise spend on a membership you won't use, start small, pick fun activities (don't spend a cent) and get started right here, right now.

Note: If you have other ambitions, say you want to learn how to knit, take up some other crafty-type hobby, learn to play an instrument or even just how to whistle (actually gave myself a headache with that one), this post can help you too.
Continue reading Get Fit For Free, and Other New Year's Resolutions

Get Fit For Free, and Other New Year's Resolutions originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 10:00:00 EST.
I hate to foist yet one more January goal-setting article on you, but what if you could position things so you wouldn't find yourself in a post-holiday debt hole again at this time next year? (Higher rates mean all of your post holiday debt will be that much more expensive to carry.)

"Many people do not plan for their holiday spending in their budgets, even though it is a major annual expense," says Jeffrey Schwartz, executive director of Consolidated Credit Counseling Services of Canada. "As a result, these expenses often end up on credit cards that can take well into the New Year to pay off."

If you've overspent at the holidays, he offers the following tips to help get back on track.
Continue reading Holidays Are Over; Plan Now to Pay Cash Next Year

Holidays Are Over; Plan Now to Pay Cash Next Year originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 12:15:00 EST. Personally, I can't keep up with the passwords I do have. And you want me to keep changing them too?

When it comes to cyber security, though, passwords and malware are just the tiniest tip of the iceberg. Even this tiny tip though, if ignored, can create a significant and vulnerable weak point which can compromise your own information and the information at companies you work for. You could even, unwittingly, allow your computer to be part of a larger network which attempts to bring down country infrastructures.

Depending on how you look at things, this can either sound hysterical or just too big for one person to worry about.
Would you believe there's stiff (and growing) competition for your debt too?

Unfortunately you probably shouldn't go running out to jump in with the first company that promises to settle your debt difficulties (were it only so simple!)

Still, if you troll websites like Facebook, if you've ever keyed some debt-related query into Google or if you listen to the radio, you've undoubtedly seen or heard advertising from companies promising relief "if you qualify." (Note: As discussed earlier, any claims that such programs are part of some government-backed initiative are complete balderdash - be careful!)

If the debt-freedom prospect appeals and you are looking at this as one of your options to getting there, one of the first things to know is that there's a difference between companies who negotiate debt settlement deals with your creditors and the more traditional not-for-profit credit counseling organizations.

There are a lot of cute options (as you've no doubt noticed if you find yourself in this boat) but I got the strong impression that cute alone isn't enough to carry the day.

Now that I have a small human of my own, it's becoming clear that instinct was correct - there are a lot of cute toys the kid doesn't care about and a lot of cute clothes that only get worn once.

Need baby gift ideas? I'm pretty close to the subject these days. Forget the onesie - sizing on kids clothes is such a crap shoot, particularly when they're growing like unpredictable weeds. (The kids, not the clothes.)
The whole thought of cyber security is an impossibly big one. I keep my anti-virus subscriptions current; I generally don't allow applications to access my Facebook profile and, if I'm lucky (and I pray I will be), I hope my trusty but aging laptop won't give up the ghost on a deadline day when things aren't backed up. That's about the extent of my concern on most days.

You might have a similar situation going on in your world. The funny (or scary) thing is, these concerns, this wee little tempest of risk in the teapot I call my own, is positively miniscule compared to the wide ocean of cyber-risk out there. Still, small, little insignificant me could make a mistake that would find my computer added to some network of machines out there, intent on bringing down a government (likely while I obliviously wonder why my service is so slow).
Topping the list is not your super-luxury sports car - those are probably too well protected.

It doesn't matter that they're well beyond their best-before date in car years, if you own an aging Honda Civic or Acura, yours is probably on the list of models car thieves and shady parts dealers look out for. (Toyotas, Fords, Cadillac, Chevrolet and even a Pontiac model all make the list this year too.)

The Insurance Bureau of Canada released its annual list this week. Interestingly, they say stolen cars are now showing up more frequently in the local market - they're not necessarily being exported out of the country. Oftentimes, they say the cars are being re-sold to unsuspecting customers.

"There's a feeling out there with the Canadian public, generally speaking, that your credit rating is one of the most important things on the planet," says Richard Cooper, president and CEO at Total Debt Freedom Inc. "The truth is it doesn't matter what you do, what debt relief program you sign up for, it's going to have an adverse affect on your credit rating."

That said, he adds this: "A credit rating is really like a rose garden and your debt is like a house. If your house is burning down, do you really care if the fire department is destroying your rose garden with their hoses?"

The total for that year came in at just under $8.3-billion. The number of donors increased too - the Canada Revenue Agency says just over 5.7 million reported charitable donations when filing their tax returns this year.
Continue reading 'Tis the Season for Generosity, Creative Giving and Balance

'Tis the Season for Generosity, Creative Giving and Balance originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Tue, 13 Dec 2011 13:00:00 EST.
(We've talked about debt settlement before - this is where you hire a third party to negotiate with your creditors on your behalf, in the hopes you'll be able to settle for an amount that's less than you owe.)

In the lineup of options available, outside of the conventional ways people pay off their debts, we have settlement, credit counseling, consumer proposals and bankruptcy. Each has its own set of conditions and repercussions.
If you have enough of it you may have noticed the growing number of advertising campaigns out there which have you, my dear target audience, locked squarely in their sights.

It's hard NOT to notice some of these campaigns - they're pretty aggressive. On Facebook: Ads promise to help you get out of debt in 36 months. The radio spots I've heard claim there's a "new government program" (Note: It turns out this is complete balderdash), and even though I'm signed up for the CRTC's Do Not Call list, I've received fair number of automated machine phone calls, again saying there's a new government program to help Canadians get out of debt: "Just press 1 now to be connected to a representative to see if you qualify."

Not only are the ads aggressive, their promise is oddly compelling, even if they do seem too good to be true.

Larry would come to replace belts, tinker with the starter and the thermostat and usually the thing would be up and running again in no time. That clothes dryer lasted FOREVER. (At least 20 years, if I'm not mistaken.)

The dryer we have today looks like the same model. It decided recently that it was no longer up to the task. It gave us some advance notice: Started making funny noises, took a little bit of time to get going once or twice and then, one day, made a slight buzzing noise when I pressed start before falling silent.

My first thought: Do people even repair appliances these days?

Just kidding. Well, sort of. According to PayPal Canada and Ipsos-Reid, the number of Canadians who are aware of this online shopping phenomenon has jumped dramatically, from 24 per cent in 2010 to 52 per cent today.

They also say roughly 41 cents of every dollar lost to scams in general, is lost to online scams in particular. (Note: If someone from Nigeria wants you to send money, don't do it.)

If you're interested in protecting yourself, we've written, somewhat extensively about the subject of online safety here at Walletpop. Check it out:
It's long been noticed that the whole "Freedom 55" notion is a bit of a joke or a dream, depending on who you ask, but the official numbers are out to confirm for the rest of us what Walmart HR departments probably know already: People are beginning to forgo or put off the traditional retirement so many dream about, to work longer and later into their lives.

Shocking, I know. If you want some official facts and figures about the phenomenon though, if you want to know how long you might be in the workforce for yourself, or if you just want to know more about who's likely be around to play with when you finally reach your prime golfing years in the future, this study on delayed retirement is a good place to start.
Continue reading Retirement, Delayed. It's a lot of money too - up to $6,000 each year.

The Grocery Maven, Teri Gault, founder and CEO of the GroceryGame.com says by following 10 simple tips, people can save enough, usually within a month, to buy (or invest in) the chest freezer that almost any frugally minded food shopper needs to keep ahead of the game.
("Knowing is half the battle." What cartoon is that from, anyway?) Hopefully this is true and hopefully this next bit will help the world at large and, specifically, those who risk finding themselves stuck in low-income purgatory.

Statistics Canada released a report recently which examines low-income determinants. It's a dreadful bit of reading - nothing you'd read for fun - that almost spends more time talking about analysis methodology (incomprehensible to the average lay-reader) than the actual issue. Wading through it, though, the paper does yield some interesting information about just how, who and how often people in Canada move in and out of low income status.
Continue reading Low Income: Who's Most Vulnerable?

Low Income: Who's Most Vulnerable? originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Mon, 07 Nov 2011 09:00:00 EST. For online retailers, I suspect this month is it. The Halloween aisle is getting cleared away to make room for the red and green and online shoppers, those with the presence of mind to shop before the very last minute deadline, are finalizing their lists.

We talked a number of top eBay entrepreneurs, handpicked by eBay Canada to receive awards for their excellence, and asked them about what makes their endeavors so successful. Their advice is good. They may or may not know what they're talking about, but that's a topic for another day. Every once and a while though you cross paths with a company that truly gets it. It's exciting when that happens. It's even more exciting when you see that they've done it by themselves.

Last year, Mathieu Gagne was disassembling cars. Today he works in a service and technology role. In a company of 200 people, his employer noted his passion for cars and for eBay, and put him to work on the task of moving the company's inventory for sale online.
Today, a little more than a year later, Lecavalier Auto Parts is being honoured by eBay Canada in the lineup of entrepreneur awards the auction company dishes out each year to some of their exceptional shop owners.
Continue reading eBay Lesson #3: Service, Supply, Price (and a Little Education)

eBay Lesson #3: Service, Supply, Price (and a Little Education) originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Thu, 27 Oct 2011 10:00:00 EST.
