Thoughts of Valentine's Day always conjures up pictures of elaborate heart-shaped boxes of premium chocolates and huge bouquets of red roses, but not all of us have the kind of money it takes to be that flamboyant in our expression of affection.

But, take heart Valentine's Day gifts needn't be expensive.
They know that after the holidays, when people have acquired new possessions, they're looking for ways to bring a sense of order to their living spaces.

Dollar stores also have many options that can help on your quest for order and I've personally used and liked many of them to help corral clutter. Here is some dollar store storage that works and how it can also save you a trunk-load of money.
Some of you may remember with horror the melamine-tainted wheat gluten and rice protein from China that found it's way into more than 100 pet food products in 2007.

Cherished family pets died eating these products and it was to be hoped that after the U.S. prosecuted those responsible for importing adulterated and mislabeled food, another such scenario could be avoided.
Now the Dollar Giant website is gone, replaced by Dollar Tree Canada's new website.

Here's a run-down of what you'll find.

The Canadian website doesn't yet have all of the features of its American counterpart but it's set up exactly the same way. For now, you can view the in-store flyer and find out if there is a store near you on the store locator page along with a featured item of the week, an About Us page, real estate page and information for vendors. You can expect that more features will be added as time goes on.
Nowadays, you can find gift cards for everything from coffee and clothing to movies and music and they make great last-minute gifts when you're absolutely stumped about what to get someone.

When you give a gift card, it may seem like the only wrapping solution is to pop it in an envelope with a greeting card but there are other options. Check out these six unique ways to wrap a gift card.
Give a gift from the dollar store? How cheap can you get? But I'm here to tell you that you can give great looking gifts from a dollar store and no one but you will know the truth of how little they cost unless you tell them.

A dollar store gift basket or goodie bag may not be appropriate for everyone, but you can cross off some of the "little people" on your Christmas gift list and do it with class.
If you're the one who's hosting a holiday party or the family dinner this Christmas, there's enough stress on the menu without the worry of what it's going to do to the budget.
A gift card allows a hard-to-buy-for recipient to choose exactly what they would like and takes the pressure off of the giver.

While dollar stores in the States have had gift cards on offer for years, the new Dollarama gift cards are, as far as I know, the first of their kind here.
Up to now, Dollarama has been the major player in the Canadian dollar store market. With the arrival of Dollar Tree, headquartered in Chesapeake, VA and so far present in four Canadian provinces, should the Quebec company be worried?

Here's my look at how Dollar Tree compares to Dollarama and how those differences might change the way we shop at dollar stores in Canada.
The dollar stores I frequent are full of great food options from North America and around the world and it's my belief that you can eat well with food from the dollar store.

Here's Part Two of my examination of dollar store food, this time focusing on drinks, desserts, baking needs and condiments. I've put an * beside the non name brands that my family and I have tried up to now and yes, we liked them.

When I wrote last year that the U.S dollar store, Dollar Tree had bought Canada's Dollar Giant, I wasn't sure whether they intended to turn Dollar Giant stores into Dollar Trees or simply open new Dollar Giants. However, I had missed a third possibility. As things stand at present, Dollar Giant will continue as is while the green Dollar Tree sign springs up across Canada. You'll see Dollar Tree mentioned on the Dollar Giant receipt and Dollar Giant's website address printed on the bottom of your Dollar Tree receipt.
Many people still consider all dollar store food unhealthy. Why? It could be that the poor quality foods of early discount stores lingers on or it could be that people perceive food sold for less as being past its best before date but that hasn't been my experience.

It's my belief that you can eat well with food from the dollar store. Here's why.
Continue reading You CAN Eat Well With Food From the Dollar Store - Part One

You CAN Eat Well With Food From the Dollar Store - Part One originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Tue, 25 Oct 2011 10:00:00 EST. The same week, I saw the exact same cheese grater for more than three times as much in a major department store.
Here are a few of the current items that are sold in both dollar stores and various other stores. They are identical in every way but cost less at the dollar store; anywhere from a few cents to a few dollars.
Continue reading Identical Products Cost Less at the Dollar Store

Identical Products Cost Less at the Dollar Store originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 11:00:00 EST. We've become a very tech-dependent society and digital cameras, cell phones and computers all have peripherals associated with them that are necessary to their respective functions. Consequently, the price you paid for that shiny new phone or camera isn't the end of the cash you'll be shelling out.

Here are six great gadgets from the dollar store that cost no more than $2 each and work the same as if you'd paid much more for them.
Continue reading Six Great Gadgets From the Dollar Store

Six Great Gadgets From the Dollar Store originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Fri, 23 Sep 2011 15:30:00 EST.
Most of the time, that's a good thing for shoppers, giving us both the quality we want along with lower prices. Unfortunately, we're not always getting the best deal.

Often, in order to be able to sell their product in a dollar store and still make a profit, the big brands must offer their products in smaller packaging and it behooves us, as smart shoppers, to compare how much product we're actually getting for the $2 price tag.

Which brand names cost more at the dollar store? Here's a random comparison of six products.
People keep asking me, "How much do you save by shopping at the dollar store?" So I tried an experiment: I tallied up everything I bought from Dollarama over a one-week period and compared that total with what it would have cost had I bought similar items at Walmart.

Here's the proof that you too can save hundreds of dollars a year shopping at the dollar store.
Continue reading Save Hundreds of Dollars a Year Shopping at the Dollar Store

Save Hundreds of Dollars a Year Shopping at the Dollar Store originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Fri, 16 Sep 2011 12:00:00 EST.
