Some of you may remember with horror the melamine-tainted wheat gluten and rice protein from China that found it's way into more than 100 pet food products in 2007.

Cherished family pets died eating these products and it was to be hoped that after the U.S. prosecuted those responsible for importing adulterated and mislabeled food, another such scenario could be avoided.

new Dollar Tree WebsiteIf you recall, Dollar Giant was bought by the American owned Dollar Tree last year and since then, there have been quite a few changes, not the least of which is the on-going opening of Dollar Tree stores in four Canadian provinces. Now the Dollar Giant website is gone, replaced by Dollar Tree Canada's new website.

Here's a run-down of what you'll find.

The Canadian website doesn't yet have all of the features of its American counterpart but it's set up exactly the same way. For now, you can view the in-store flyer and find out if there is a store near you on the store locator page along with a featured item of the week, an About Us page, real estate page and information for vendors. You can expect that more features will be added as time goes on.

Dollar Tree in CanadaThere may not be such a thing as a money tree but there have been confirmed sightings of Dollar Trees growing in Canada.

When I wrote last year that the U.S dollar store, Dollar Tree had bought Canada's Dollar Giant, I wasn't sure whether they intended to turn Dollar Giant stores into Dollar Trees or simply open new Dollar Giants. However, I had missed a third possibility. As things stand at present, Dollar Giant will continue as is while the green Dollar Tree sign springs up across Canada. You'll see Dollar Tree mentioned on the Dollar Giant receipt and Dollar Giant's website address printed on the bottom of your Dollar Tree receipt.

I like to tell the story of the four-sided metal cheese grater that I bought for a buck when I first started shopping at dollar stores. The same week, I saw the exact same cheese grater for more than three times as much in a major department store.
