But with financial scandals occurring on a regular basis, it's difficult to know who to trust. In Part II of a two-part series, Graydon Watters, president of the Financial Education Institute of Canada and Bruce Sellery, founder of BNN, explain how you can find the course that best suits your needs. (To read part one of the series, click here)
Graydon Watters, president of the Financial Education Institute of Canada, says the trust factor is "a huge" issue when it comes to selecting a course on finance. But people have many options at colleges and universities.

He advises people to consider enrolling in a certified financial planner education program. Even if you don't want to become one, the course will be of great assistance.
Continue reading Financial Education and You: Part II

Financial Education and You: Part II originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Mon, 27 Feb 2012 14:16:00 EST. But try as you might, you can't find a way to redeem all those frequent flyer miles or other travel rewards points that you have accumulated through credit card purchases because of restrictions imposed by the airlines and other factors.
The mystery has remained unsolved for years. According to Visa's second annual deceptive marketing survey, 21 per cent of Canadian credit card holders have been victimized by fraudsters after accepting an offer online or over the phone. Typically, the frauds involve hidden clauses or terms that are not well disclosed.

B.C. and Ontario residents reported the highest incidence rates, 26 per cent and 24 per cent respectively. On the Prairies, 17 per cent of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba residents reported being victimized.
According to a new TD Canada Trust poll, 50 per cent of small business owners think 2012 will be a good business year and a further 13 per cent believe it might be the best yet.

"It's very encouraging to see the majority of small business owners are so optimistic about their business prospects in 2012," said Alec Morley, TD Canada Trust's senior vice-president of small business banking in a news release. "Sixty-five percent of Canadian small business owners gave their company's recent performance a B or above, so it's evident that many entrepreneurs are experiencing success despite the barriers in their way and this is due, in part, to good business planning, hiring talented teams and innovating."

The concerns include cash-flow worries and labour shortages. The 2011 TD CanadaTrust Small Business Survey examined the attitudes and behaviours of small business owners in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouverand Calgary. The results found two in 10 small business owners gave their company an A-plus (5%) or A (16%) for 2010 while 44% graded their business a B, 22% gave their businesses a C, and 11% gave their company a D.
Continue reading TD Survey: Small Business Owners Remain Positive

TD Survey: Small Business Owners Remain Positive originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Thu, 27 Oct 2011 14:00:00 EST.
"Correcting misconceptions about commissions is something that is very common for realtors," said OREA president Barbara Sukkau in a recent news release. "A realtor's commission isn't set in stone, it is agreed upon by the client and realtor in the buyer representation agreement or listing agreement."

Names of the documents may vary by province, but the Ontario group's advice is good for all Canadian. OREA issued the reminder as services that enable consumers to buy or sell their own home without a realtor proliferate. The Canadian Competition Bureau has cracked down on residential realtors and required real estate boards to make more information available to consumers through the Multiple Listing Service.

As Walletpop previously reported, the bureau and realtors reached an agreement on MLS-related issues last year. But the decision to buy or sell a home on your own is not black and white.

Ricardo Borba, an engineer and software developer who lives in Ottawa, became the first individual buyer of a 2011 Nissan Leaf as he picked up the keys recently in the nation's capital. Nissan has also some fleet sales in the works.

"This represents the freedom to choose a car that has no tailpipe, produces no emissions and will never have to visit a gas station," said Allen Childs, president of Nissan Canada Inc., in a news release.

Borba, a 44-year old electric engineer and software developer with IBM who is married and has a young son, plans to use the Leaf as the primary family vehicle.

Credit cards with excessive transaction fees, according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

CFIB has identified numerous credit cards that hurt consumers and small businesses alike. MasterCard, which uses the above question as a marketing slogan, is among the worst offenders, along with card issuers CIBC and Bank of Montreal.

Dan Kelly, CFIB's senior vice-president of legislative affairs, says many consumers and businesses are not aware of the fee structures, which range from one per cent 1.5 per cent to three per cent of a purchase price. The high costs are contributing $5 billion annually to Canadian banks' revenues.
Continue reading High credit card costs hurt the consumer, says CFIB

High credit card costs hurt the consumer, says CFIB originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Sat, 24 Sep 2011 11:00:00 EST.
You're not the only one.

Real estate developers say the market is picking up after two or three difficult years. Even with the economy struggling again of late, they are forging ahead with development projects that were postponed after the global economic downturn struck in late 2008.

"We still think it's a vibrant market for, in my case, Albertans buying in B.C.," says Sam Boguslavsky, president of Calgary-based Sable Resorts. Sable is marketing 18 units at Mara Lake in B.C.'s Shuswap/Northern Okanagan region and hoping to sell out before commencing the next phase.

"In general, our consumers are a lot more confident than they were two or three years ago," says Bogluslavsky "We're getting that feedback through the purchasing process."
Where will the NDP go from here?

The next six to 12 months will determine how good a job the late party leader did at succession planning.
The NDP aren't alone. Many family-owned businesses and other small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are also grappling with succession plans as baby boomers start to retire en masse and in some cases, pass away. But business groups and advisors say most family-owned firms are not ready for leadership change - because they have not planned sufficiently.
As I learned from experience, you'll be glad you did.

Recently, I traveled to China, but felt like I was in Mexico. As happened years earlier on a Mexican holiday, I was stricken with Montezuma's Revenge.

I had been fine during the first week, when I toured five cities by bus in southern China near Shanghai. Our group ate at high end restaurants and stayed at top-quality hotels. But during the second week, I went to my traveling partner's hometown of Xi'An and purchased food and water from small suburban hole-in-the wall restaurants and shops.
Lately, the news about contagious travel illnesses has been dominated by swine flu. But good old Montezuma's Revenge-and in no way does that refer only to the Mexican strain of travel-induced diarrhea-is by far the most common travel illness threatening a carefree vacation. "About 40 percent of people will get diarrhea when traveling in an undeveloped country, which covers most of the world," says Dr. Stephen Berger, founder and medical advisor for GIDEON, on online infectious diseases database. Exposure to different strains of the E. coli bacteria, present in all of our bodies, says Berger, is what usually causes diarrhea in travelers, and it can happen in any country.
The most prevalent travel-related illness is also one of the most difficult to prevent. "The number one health complaint of all travelers going internationally is diarrhea," says Dr. Erik McLaughlin, who specializes in travel and health expedition medicine and gives advice in layman's language on his website, www.adventurehealthclinic.com. "I don't know anyone who doesn't get it on some sort of trip, anywhere," says McLaughlin of what's commonly termed Montezuma's Revenge. And staying in luxury hotels in no way makes you immune, he warns. You can lower your chances of getting diarrhea by drinking only purified water and avoiding fresh fruits and vegetables. The E. coli bacteria is very sensitive to heat, so be sure to eat only well-cooked foods, too. In a pinch, says McLaughlin, you can make your own concoction to replace electrolytes by mixing purified water with a couple of teaspoons of sugar and a dash of salt.

Once limited to tropical areas, a recent outbreak of this mosquito-borne disease in Italy proved that it's spreading from its predominant Indian Ocean locale. The disease's name comes from an African word meaning "that which bends you up." But it's rarely seen in Africa, with most travelers coming down with chikungunya after visiting Indian Ocean destinations such as India, Thailand, the Maldives and Sri Lanka. While rarely fatal, the initial mosquito bite leads to terrible joint and muscle pain, fever and rashes. No vaccines exist to prevent the disease, so travelers should follow similar precautions as with malaria prevention-use insect repellent, sleep under a mosquito net and staying indoors and well-covered at sunset and after.

Wherever large groups of people congregate in tight quarters, the dreaded norovirus has the potential to rear its ugly head; hence the close association with cruise ships, where the sickness is most likely to affect travelers. Norovirus is rarely fatal, but its effects- nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea -can really rain on the parade. And since the virus spreads through contaminated water and food, there's little you can do to avoid it. "There's no real prevention and no treatment, and the cruise ship industry is going crazy with how to control it," says Dr. Berger, "Some pull back into port and use brutal sterilization of the water system and tanks holding the water, then they'll have another outbreak."

More fun with mosquitoes! Severe flu-like symptoms following a mosquito bite might mean dengue fever has taken up residence inside you, especially if you've just returned from parts of the Caribbean, South Pacific, Asia, Latin American or Africa. "The incidence of dengue fever is really up the past year or so," says Joan Hersh, a registered nurse at the travel clinic at St. Elizabeth Business Health Center in Edgewood, Ken., "Before, it was unusual for tourists or travelers to get it during short trips, but now they are getting it." The virus, also known as breakbone fever, is very painful, and accompanied by severe muscle and joint pain. Hersh says she is seeing dengue fever in patients returning from Central America and India, in particular.

For travelers, the most relevant of the insect-borne diseases is malaria, a potentially fatal disease prevalent in much of the developing world (Latin America, Asia, Africa, the South Pacific, Caribbean and parts of Eastern Europe). Teddy Roosevelt contracted the disease during a river trip in Africa and John F. Kennedy caught malaria in the South Pacific during WWII. Travelers to affected areas should take precautions to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes-use repellent that contains DEET, sleep only in rooms with screened windows and hang a mosquito net around your bed, and wear long sleeves and long pants after sunset to help avoid bites. Most importantly, visit your doctor before departing on your trip to get a prescription for one of the several malaria prevention medications on the market. The World Health Organization advises against traveling with young children and infants to malaria-affected countries.

So he decided to take a year off from school, worked in the restaurant industry for about seven months and then traveled around Europe. He is now a University of British Columbia psychology student, with plans to teach at the college or university level, and credits the time off for helping him determine his path.

"It opened my eyes and let me discover what I wanted to do at university," he says. "Coming right out of high school, I wasn't too certain. But meeting a lot of people on your travels helped you sculpt yourself."
The 21-year-old New Westminster, B.C., native, is not alone. Many students now find themselves at the crossroads of their academic careers. They are all asking themselves the same question: Should I stay at school or should I take time off and see the world?
Continue reading Student Travel Question: Should You Stay or Should You Go?

Student Travel Question: Should You Stay or Should You Go? originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Thu, 18 Aug 2011 13:00:00 EST.
Canada's largest grocery chain recently released its annual sustainable seafood progress report, which indicates the company will rid its shelves and coolers of unsustainable fish products by 2013. The report's finding, were validated by the Marine Stewardship Council, which sets sustainability standards on seafood harvesting and sales. The report found Loblaw has increased its MSC-certified products to 47 from 16 a year ago.
"We are moving into an exciting point of our journey, marked with notable achievements including introducing WiseSource salmon, a more responsibly farmed Atlantic Salmon, and altering our procurement practice for fresh swordfish to pole and line or harpoon to launching an education website oceansfortomorrow.ca," said Paul Uys, vice president of sustainable seafood for Loblaw Companies Limited in a news release. "We have a way to go, and it remains a daunting task."

Continue reading Loblaw Sustainability Report Receives MSC Blessing

Loblaw Sustainability Report Receives MSC Blessing originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Sat, 16 Jul 2011 09:29:00 EST.
The federal Competition Bureau cracked down hard on Bell after ruling the telecommunications giant enticed consumers with "false and misleading advertising." The federal agency found that Bell's prices were higher than advertised - and the company did not explain extra charges properly in the fine print.

The bureau's decision touched on a pet peeve of many consumers and WalletPop readers. WalletPop has been following this issue for several months. In 2010, late senior blogger Liz Metcalfe showed how '10 minutes of cell phone use can cost $187'. Metcalfe wrote another story on the subject entitled 'And You Thought Your Cell Phone Carrier Sucked'. Blogger Terry Fong also wrote about the issue in his article, about avoiding evil roaming charges.

All they'll have to do is check the label.

Loblaw has become the first major Canadian retailer to sell Marine Stewardship Council certified Pacific sockeye salmon, Pacific cod, Pacific halibut and Atlantic haddock at the fresh seafood counter at select Loblaws stores in the GTA.

Created in 1997, the MSC is an international non-profit organization that promotes solutions for over-fishing and its impacts on oceans around the globe. The Seattle-based group ranks the world's leading certification and eco-labeling program for sustainable wild caught seafood.

The MSC eco-label can only be used once there has been independent verification that the seafood product being sold originated from a certified sustainable fishery. Given the vulnerable nature of West Coast salmon runs, sustainability is a big issue for those who derive their livelihood, in the case of First Nations, food supply from the sacred fish.
While many suggested gift lists exclude ties, Mondragon, the president and CEO of Ford of Canada, adores his. They came ahead of schedule from his twin seven-year-old daughters Emily and Jessica.

The B.C. credit union offers flexible work programs so that dads (and moms, too) can spend valuable time with their kids.

"This is a great place to work and we want people to know that we recognize people need a balance - and these days, family comes first," says Kristina Svab, Coast's direct or of total rewards.

The programs include flexible work hours, the opportunity to work at home or at a branch close to home, personal days for tending to an ill spouse or child; a re-orientation from parental leave; a one-day paid birth or adoption day, and a 10-month employment program that allows employees to take July and August off so that they can spend time with their kids while they're off school in the summer.
Continue reading Father's Day Lasts Full Year At Coast Capital

Father's Day Lasts Full Year At Coast Capital originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Sat, 18 Jun 2011 17:10:00 EST.
