It's easy to put these practices to work and that will pay off big time when it comes to your water bills. This is especially true now that many municipalities are moving to a consumption based model, where homes are metered and charged accordingly.

In Toronto for example, a typical monthly bill for a single family home runs about 600 dollars. But the city has had a long-term plan to increase water rates by 9 per cent each year through 2012. And like everything else, water costs are only going to rise, so start saving with these easy-to-implement fixes.
Nor is it the sports arena, in her hometown of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, that was named after her. And, although, receiving the Order of Canada comes extremely close, her highest honour is being a mother to her 12-year-old son.

Being a mother comes with the responsibility of shaping and nurturing a future generation. This is a role that she is proud to share with 9.2 million Canadian women, who make both small and large sacrifices to raise confident, well-adjusted contributors to society. Indeed, mothers are worthy of public praise.
Hayley will be one of five Mom Ambassadors who will determine who will be the lucky eight finalists and the winners of a $10,000 award. After 10 years of building and leading a multiple award-winning company, she felt that it was time to take a step back and thoroughly examine her options.

From the start, McNamara chose not to make her business all about her and had always made a point to develop a strong leadership team, in case she wanted to take some time away from the business. While the NDP leadership race continues to heat up. McNamara is calm, cool and collected. Her forward thinking has paid off. She recently handed over the CEO title to APEX President, Linda Andross, but she still enjoys hanging around the office.
And we, laid-back Canadians have been behind some of the greatest inventions in the world. However, studies show that two thirds of Canadians are unaware of the homegrown inventors and inventions that helped to change our world. Let's change that and continue to innovate.
Story follows below:

1. Light bulb

Who invented the light bulb? If you said Thomas Edison, you're wrong. Canadian Henry Woodward invented it. Between 1873 and 1874, Woodward with the help of Toronto innkeeper Matthew Evans, invented a glass bulb with an enclosed carbon filament and nitrogen gas. It was patented in 1874. But that's where it ended because they didn't have enough money to produce and sell their own invention. One year later they sold the patent to (drum roll please) Thomas Edison.
Continue reading Top 10 Great Canadian Inventions

Top 10 Great Canadian Inventions originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Tue, 01 May 2012 07:00:00 EST.
The key to maximizing your tax return is to plan ahead, so you won't miss some of the little deductions that could make a big difference to your tax return.

Beyond the usual deductions, there are more that people have successfully argued are valid deductions. Have a look and see what has worked - and what hasn't - in the murky world of tax write-offs.
1. Claim pet food

Sometimes being a pet owner can really add up. So, the cost of feeding your pet should be an allowable deduction. Right? Um ... maybe. A farmer took this issue to the Tax Court of Canada and won on the grounds that his outdoor cat and dog were protecting his blueberry fields from wildlife.
Continue reading 8 Weird Tax Write-Offs

8 Weird Tax Write-Offs originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Mon, 23 Apr 2012 12:00:00 EST.
Usually, when it comes to looking for a new home, house hunters spend hours poring through one-dimensional data found on the Multiple Listing Service. Armed with the knowledge that some people have earned their living from posting content on YouTube, he turned his hobby of creating videos targeted at high school students into a well oiled-cash machine. Since 2009, his InformalMantis self-help videos have gradually built a steady, loyal following.

"I could live my dream of helping people on YouTube by posting how-to tutorials," he says. "Right now it's putting a big dent in my tuition and I'm not even a full-time YouTuber, but it helps as a university student."
Continue reading Students Use YouTube to Create their Own Summer Jobs

Students Use YouTube to Create their Own Summer Jobs originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Tue, 10 Apr 2012 08:00:00 EST. People, it's only a game. Maybe the event would have fared better if the participants knew that everyone could and would get a basketful of treats, especially when the treats are pretty cheap. Here are seven budget-friendly Easter ideas to try that are, hopefully, aggression-free.

1. Create a family Easter basket. Place a large plate on a table and decorate it with Easter
grass and goodies. You can purchase Easter grass from Walmart for just $1. If you want to
keep an eye on the amount of sugar your child consumes, top the grassy heap with filler
eggs (Walmart 42-pack $2.97 each). As an alternative to a gooey sugary centre place
stickers from the dollar store inside.
So when Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty tabled the 2012 federal budget, Canadian innovation was at the forefront.
This week, the federal government made good on their Economic Action Plan 2011 promise by banning unsolicited credit card cheques from credit-card companies.

"This would mean consumers would only receive this product on request and when they have made a fully informed decision to do so," said Ted Menzies, the minister of state for finance, at the announcement at the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada offices.

The catch is his successor doesn't know that he's the chosen one. If you're a business owner with plans of having your business survive you, it's never too early to start thinking about your succession plan. Here are five tips to consider:

1. Determine what makes your organization valuable.
After years of toiling away at your business, have you ever stopped to analyze what has made your it a success? You should. The person who replaces you will have to be in alignment with your vision. Moreover, you want to find someone who shares the same goals. If your achievement is linked to the skills and knowledge that you as the business owner have, make sure you provide ample time to train your successor. For example, if you're a lawyer or an accountant, hire a junior practitioner who will eventually take over your firm long before you decide to step down.
Eighteen-year-old Bobbi Kristina Brown's troubled life took a turn for the worst last Saturday when her mother, Whitney Houston, died tragically in a Beverly Hills hotel room. With her dear and talented mother gone, let's hope that a trust fund was left behind as part of the songstress' legacy.

Some people might automatically assume that Bobbi Kristina will be a trust fund baby because of the wealth of both her famous parents. To date it's hard to put a figure on Whitney Houston's financial worth, however, at one point she sold over 200,000 million albums and singles. For a time she was one of America's wealthiest women, in fact, she was listed third, just after Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Streisand. That's no surprise considering the extraordinary singer had signed a $100 million record deal in 2001. Alas, that was a long time ago.
Continue reading In Whitney Houston We Trust

In Whitney Houston We Trust originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Tue, 21 Feb 2012 04:00:00 EST. Can you spare $157.3 million dollars? No? I didn't think so. According to Statistics Canada that's what individuals and unincorporated businesses spent in 2010 to prepare and file their taxes. The worst part is some Canadians shouldn't have to pay a penny.

Who can get help
If you are considered to be a low-income wage earner you could be eligible for free tax preparation. Many not-for-profit agencies, such as the United Way provide core funding to community organizations so that they can offer free tax clinics. Some organizations have an individual income cut off of $25,000 and under, or a family income of $35,000 and under. Many of these tax clinics will open by the end of February.
Continue reading Where to Find Free Tax Help

Where to Find Free Tax Help originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Wed, 15 Feb 2012 13:00:00 EST. She was referring to the importance of focusing on life's priorities; the enlivening role that children play in our lives. It's cautionary advice that we all should take seriously as we ride the wave of the RRSP season, and await the outcome of the OAS debates.

Statistics Canada reported that in 25 years, approximately a quarter of the Canadian population (roughly 10 million) will be seniors. So when retirement is decades or less away, sorting out the fine details is frequently the elephant in the room.

Unfortunately, fatal illness can strike when you least expect it.

Evelyn Jacks, president of the Winnipeg-based Knowledge Bureau and one of Canada's leading tax experts knows from personal experience how things can change quickly and dramatically. Within the span of 18 months she lost four members of her family, including both of her parents. In addition, each case required extensive, expensive palliative care.

"I can't stand having to pay for that (expletive) tax, when I purchase a flight" says Jennifer, a 33-year-old program officer from Ottawa, Ontario.

In 2006, the Government of Canada introduced Bill C-11, which requires the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) to regulate how airfare is advertised. But over six years have gone by and the Act hasn't been enforced until now.

Canadian low-cost carrier WestJet has used all-in air price advertising in their display ads, banner ads, website landing pages and print materials since early January 2012. WestJet admits that they have a minor technical glitch that their web provider will resolve within the coming months. Today when you book a flight, you will have to hover over the price and an overlay will provide you with the complete price breakdown of that particular flight. In the near future they hope to display the all-in price without the need to hover over the listed price. This feature is not commonly available around the world, and WestJet expects that this level of transparency will please many consumers. And now, Air Canada, too, is advertising all-in pricing.
Continue reading Changes in Airline Advertising a Big Win for Consumers

Changes in Airline Advertising a Big Win for Consumers originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Fri, 10 Feb 2012 08:00:00 EST. Remember cute 12-year-old Haley Joel Osment in the film Pay It Forward? In case you missed it, the film is about a young boy who tries to make the world a better place by helping three people who, in turn, will help other people. This Hollywood film sets an excellent example for anyone who wants to succeed in life and in business.

On occasion we may hear stories about how a millionaire paid a financially struggling woman's late electric bill or a celebrity who left a 200% tip to a waitress. Kind gestures, indeed. But you don't need to have the wealth of Oprah and her 1% peers to make a positive change in someone's life.

Everyday people can and do make a big difference.
Continue reading Pay it Forward to Get Ahead

Pay it Forward to Get Ahead originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Fri, 03 Feb 2012 08:30:00 EST.
True, caring for your hair and skin in the winter can be a challenge, and you'll probably spend more money on beauty essentials during the colder months.

Very often hair of all types becomes frizzy, dull, and unruly. Exposure to extreme temperatures is the culprit. Moreover, heat from blow dryers, flat irons and curlers don't help either. So what can you do about it?

First, don't go on a spending spree winter-proofing your beauty routine.

The truth is expensive hair care products are not always better for the health of your hair. In fact, there's no reason to spend more than eight dollars on hair care products. Nevertheless, your stylist may tell you that the drugstore brands are inferior. The next time you're in the beauty aisle, pick up a high-end brand and a cheaper brand, and compare the ingredient list.

Notice that the list is similar? The price won't tell you the value of the product on your hair. The truth is both expensive and inexpensive hair care products have more in common than you think. What's the difference? Price. Do you want to know more money-saving tips for beating the winter hair and skin care blues? Here are some great tips!
