For most Canadians after almost 50 years in the workforce, taking time with family and friends is the Life of Riley well deserved.

But like any age group, retirees can still be financially vulnerable, and as one of the largest growing age groups in North America, there are still many possibilities of what can happen to affect the nest egg.

For those retirees who want to make sure they're still the kings and queens of their money, here's six tips to avoid any problems in the golden years.
Continue reading Hey Retirees - Six Financial Mistakes to Avoid

Hey Retirees - Six Financial Mistakes to Avoid originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Mon, 06 Feb 2012 11:23:00 EST.
Health Canada and West Elm have issued a recall for the Overarching Floor Lamp, due to the possible shock hazard because of a short circuit problem with the lamp's wiring.

The curved lamp is nickel with a lampshade in natural, white or charcoal linen.

There have been 39 reports of short circuits in the United States, but no reports in Canada. The lamps were sold in Canada from March until November 2011, with over 150 sold in-store and online.

Consumers are asked to return the lamp to a West Elm store for a full refund and can contact the retailer at 1-855-236-1941.

Its been unseasonably warm for many of us across Canada - and the desire to flee into the sun has been lessened by temps hovering at zero and the lack of blizzards.

But what about the ski and snowboard crowd? For them, this winter so far has been a disappointment. All that new gear brought by Santa has so far seen little action.

But if you're willing to travel - there's a few spots that the snow has indeed made it on to the mountain.
For added inspiration and motivation, the best answer may be hiring a personal trainer.

After figuring out what you need first (as shown in part one) - next you need to know how to find the right personal trainer for you.

Brent Bishop, a personal trainer and owner of Think Fitness Studios, advises that after you've made a commitment to work on your health, finding the right personal trainer is just as important as finding a physician or a dentist.

Bishop has several suggestions on what to ask and things to know about hiring a personal trainer.
Continue reading How to Hire a Personal Trainer (Part Two)

How to Hire a Personal Trainer (Part Two) originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Thu, 26 Jan 2012 17:00:00 EST.
Remember when your gym teacher forced everyone to climb the rope, run relay or learn to play tennis?

I certainly do, and although I whined and complained about spending an hour in a baggy t-shirt and sweatpants, I was grateful for the motivation to go outside and get moving.

As an adult, I can come with a million of excuses to not exercise.

Whether it's my old gym clothes (I really should head to LuluLemon) or the time (don't I need to reorganize my kitchen cupboard), there's always an excuse as to why I don't go to the gym.

So will a personal trainer be the answer to my endless ways to avoid working up a sweat?
Continue reading How to Hire a Personal Trainer (Part One)

How to Hire a Personal Trainer (Part One) originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Thu, 26 Jan 2012 14:00:00 EST. Fly south.

Whether its to Mexico, Caribbean, Florida or Las Vegas, Canadians are happy to figure out how to get on a plane and get away from snow, ice and cold temperatures.

According to Google Insights, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick residents are looking for the travel deals, closely followed by Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

If plans are to take the better half and the family to a tropical climate, remember to bring the bathing suit, sunscreen and make sure to visit the family doctor.
Continue reading Looking to Escape Winter?
Health Canada has issued a recall for Little Tricky multi-purpose helmets that can be used as bicycle helmets. The helmets do not meet the safety requirements for collision testing.

The recall includes the Triple Eight S/M EPS helmet in black, white, bone, blue and green and Sector 9 S/M EPS helmet in gray, white, black, blue and green, both with the logo on both sides of the helmet and can be used for kids or youth.
We're not eager to take the credit card out of the wallet.

But dear consumers, you should be shopping in January - if you have some money tucked away, there are bargains to be had - whether it's small ticket or big ticket, there are several items that purchased now will save money later.

And you won't be fighting crowds to find the deal.

So what's on the shopping list? For the spontaneous shopper, the list will be items that won't cause any spending stress are good for those who are planning for next year's holiday season.

Continue reading Should I Be Shopping in January?
Health Canada has issued a recall for Dora the Explorer, Sesame Street and Spider-Man water bottles, as the stopper can potentially come out, posing a hazard to children.

The plastic water bottles have a pull up spout, are marked with the brand FAIGIE and the item #10-3003582.

Consumers are asked to stop using the water bottles and dispose of them. Almost 350,000 bottles were sold at Dollarama from December 2007 until December 2011.
Are you ready to make a commitment to the bright, new, shiny year?

The annual tradition of making a new year resolution is common, but do people actually still do it? According to a Virgin Mobile Canada survey, the answer is no.

When it comes to New Year's resolutions, Canadians like to make 'em and break 'em! More than half (51%) of Canadians make News Year's resolutions, but most of us (52%) can't even last more than a month before we give in to temptation.

This means that right about now, all those resolutions that millions of well-intentioned Canadians made are on their way out the window.

West Elm, a division of Williams-Sonoma Inc., as well as the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada have issued a recall for the Dover Dining Table, a tempered glass-topped dining table with a brown wood base, with SKU# 2188233.

The table base is not able to support the weight of the table top and can collapse, posing a safety hazard. There have been 14 reports of table base collapses and almost a 1000 tables sold in Canada and the United States between July and October 2011.

Consumers are asked to contact West Elm for a full store credit and to arrange a free pickup of the table at 1-855-369-4335.

Although many of us can easily get caught up in the whirlwind of parties and gifts, this season is also about giving, and for those not so fortunate, there are many ways to share the spirit of generosity during the festive season.

Despite the recent recession, according to the latest survey from Statistics Canada, Canadians are more generous than ever, giving $8.3 billion in 2010, a 6.5% increase over 2009 donations.

Instead of focusing on the latest electronics, the perfect sweater or the toy of the season, how about giving the gift of clean drinking water, a goat or the gift of education? It may not be as easily displayed under the tree, but it will have a lasting effect.

Here's a list of gifts that can make a difference now and for the new year.

Every week Walletpop Canada examines what products are being recalled, and regularly checks the Federal Government's site Healthy Canadians, to see what's been pulled off the shelves and removed from the grocery store.

There has been a steady list of recalled items found in every room of the house: male sexual enhancement drugs and herbal weight loss drinks to sports equipment, cars and toys - there are now a regular list of items that retailers and consumers need to be made aware. And another reminder - recalls don't expire.

So what items are repeat recall offenders?
Sometimes its because of work - researching information and finding out answers to questions - but sometimes its a procrastinator's dream - looking up pretty things to buy, reading interesting blogs or reading the news of the day.

Canadians are busy online - according to Kijiji Canada statistics, we're busy looking through 1300 classified ads per minute, which breaks down to 22 searches per second or 185 listings per second.

The most recent statistics confirm online shopping is increasing, with $15 billion spent in 2009.

So what are we searching for online? What is tempting us to spend our hard earned loonies?

As Forrest Gump said, "life is like a box of chocolates" and we all want to indulge.

The sweet cocoa treat is intrinsically linked to the holidays and its the perfect item to give to friends and offer at the holiday parties.

Each family has a favourite for sharing during parties and drop-ins - so what chocolate confections are always on your table during the holidays Canada?
But did you ever think that would be considered eco-friendly?

With the whirl of parties using disposable plates, cups and bowls or the endless amount of gift bags, tissue paper and boxes to display those gifts, the environment isn't always the winner this month.

So how to be more eco-responsible, still celebrate and decorate so Santa Claus will visit and the family gets into the holiday spirit?
Continue reading Six Tips to be Eco-Responsible this Holiday Season

Six Tips to be Eco-Responsible this Holiday Season originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Wed, 14 Dec 2011 08:00:00 EST. Is it procrastination? Or do we truly need the looming deadline to complete the task?

As the countdown continues on the shopping days until December 25th, there are many shoppers who are shaking in their boots over the thought of entering a shopping mall or major retailer - especially since they know they won't be alone.

And if you google last minute gifts - www.lastminute.com pops up - but it may not offer as many suggestions as you'd like.

So how to finish off the gift list without losing your mind or overspending? Take a deep breath and follow these easy rules of gift acquisition.
Continue reading Five Tips to Buy Last Minute Gifts Without Losing Your Mind (or Wallet)

Five Tips to Buy Last Minute Gifts Without Losing Your Mind (or Wallet) originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Tue, 13 Dec 2011 09:00:00 EST.
For many of us, its not just about finding the right gift for a family member or a close friend, its also about travelling to a destination during the busy festive season.

Although finding a flight or a train ticket may not be impossible, the price in December can be frightful. There are still some deals to be had through Expedia.ca or Travelocity.ca, if you can be flexible about timing.

But there are other ways to save some money and keep your budget in check during the holiday season, and maybe even benefit others, thanks to some hotel promotions now available.
Continue reading Holiday Deals for Travellers

Holiday Deals for Travellers originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Fri, 09 Dec 2011 10:00:00 EST.
Have you found a gift for Cousin Susie or Aunt Debbie? Doesn't your best friend deserve a little something more than a gift card?

I find the atmosphere at many retailers starts out festive, with holiday music and pretty displays.

But as the days get closer to the 25th of December, the frenzy of needing to find the right gift becomes the fixation and the niceties of the season are thrown out the window. Shopping becomes a combat sport.

Health Canada has issued a recall for Breeze Platinum Series Canned Tan Spray as the product does not have proper labelling requirements to be sold in Canada.

The lack of labelling could cause consumers to misuse the product and lead to injury.

The tan spray has been sold in Canada since 2004, and the recall covers products sold from 2004 until October 2011.

Consumers can contact Breeze Products Inc. for more information at 1-888-3330-8570 and receive a full refund for purchase of the product.
Continue reading The Recall Report: Tanning spray, Rattle, GM Volt & Food hazards

The Recall Report: Tanning spray, Rattle, GM Volt & Food hazards originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Wed, 07 Dec 2011 09:00:00 EST.
