Gary Schaeffer dreamed of golden Italian sunshine, succulent tomatoes Caprese and picture-perfect vistas.

In May 2009, when he was set to marry for the second time, he wanted to spend a little less -- or more specifically, spend differently on an event more focused on himself and his wife-to-be.

"I had done the big wedding and gone and spent too much on other people," said the retired Goldman Sachs exec.

Out of the Box Offices: Forget the Cubicle, Embrace Mobility

Filed under: Budgeting & Planning, Entrepreneurship, Technology

The working world is going through major changes - its not just the compartmentalized world of Dilbert anymore.

For most of us the path of our career led us from the mosh pit of cubicles to want the hallowed ground of our own office, with four walls and a door.

But with the continuing advances in technology and the changing views of how work is accomplished, is a cubicle or office even necessary?

Do we still need to label our scissors and staplers and have a permanent place to set up shop?

According to Marcia Mayhew, there's a new way to view the office - it's all about multipurpose and shared spaces to gain the innovative advantage.

Recharge of the Cool: The Electric Car You'll Want Is Finally Coming

Filed under: Shopping, Technology, Going Green

Tesla Motors
By Rick Aristotle Munarriz

Tesla Motors (TSLA) has some good news for fans of the American maker of electric cars. Tesla's Model S -- the company's first reasonably priced vehicle -- may hit the streets as early as next month.

Sure, calling the all-electric car reasonably priced is relative. The cheapest Model S is going for $49,900, and that's with the $7,500 tax credit baked into the price. Obviously that's going to price the car out of the range of most drivers. However, compared to the defining Tesla Roadster that hit the market with a six-figure price tag four years ago, the Model S is a relative bargain.

Tesla was originally not expected to begin delivering the car until July at the earliest. However, if the car is able to clear its government crash ratings test in the coming weeks, the company is comfortable in bumping the release window up to June.

Demand Speeds Ahead of Supply

If you're considering a Model S purchase, the June arrivals won't matter. More than 10,000 people have plunked down $5,000 as a deposit for the new car, and Tesla only expects to roll 5,000 units off the assembly line this year.

Folks are also starting to get in line for the Model X that Tesla has in the works for early 2014 deliveries. Likely to hit the market at similar pricing to this year's Model S, Model X is an all-electric-crossover SUV complete with rear passenger doors that open up like falcon wings.

Yes, Tesla is cool. It's also not profitable at the moment.

Let's face it, many of us suck at managing our money: we don't know the first about budgeting, we're in debt up to our eyeballs and we spend money like it's on fire.

In those cases, some of us call in the reinforcements and hire a money coach, unearthing our most shameful spending habits and our most debilitating psychological hang-ups around money -- all in an effort to correct them. With our most personal and private financial shortcomings, and all of the psychological or family issues they stem from, disclosed to our money coac these people better know what they're doing.

But the thing is...they don't have to. Anyone can become a money coach.

What's New At the Mall? It's All About YOU Shopper

As the season changes, there's a flurry of activity to get ready for the warm days and (hopefully) endless sunshine.

For so many of us, a trip to the mall (or time spent online shopping) is the way to reduce the list of acquisitions needed for home and closet.

Retailers will be happy to see consumers - in a recent survey from American Express Canada, businesses such as restaurants, grocery, gas, pharmacy and apparel are very optimistic about the next 12 months, with 85 per cent of them saying the future looks bright.

But what does this mean for consumers? What's the lure for us to keep the economic flow going in Canada?

Beware Fraudsters' New Tricks, Financial Consumer Agency Warns

Filed under: Buyer Beware, Credit Cards, Fraud

fraudThe phone rings, and a polite voice on the other end of the line enquires after your health and whatnot. The voice says it's your financial institution's representative calling, and while they're at it, they find out from YOU which financial institution they represent, actually.

And then they proceed to ask questions that are none of their business. If your answer is anything else than asking them for THEIR number, checking it, and reporting it to the police AND to your financial institution forthwith, blame yourself. You've just been had.
