CFL Bulbs: Poison, Politics and Spin
Filed under: Health, House & Home, Your Home
I wonder if Thomas Edison ever imagined, even in his wildest dreams, that his invention, the light bulb would ever be surrounded by so much spin and controversy.Once upon a time when they first came out, I vaguely remember reading somewhere that you shouldn't handle compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) bulbs too much – that the oils on my hands would weaken the bulb, causing it to burst and emit its noxious contents, ensuring that all of my future children would be born with three heads. I imagine now that this was probably propagandist bunk.
I hadn't given it much thought since, but then my husband came home the other day, concerned and suggesting that we should stock up on incandescent bulbs before they were phased out and banned altogether.
