Stock Upgrades: The Force is with Disney

Clocks and stocks both went back last week, with the Dow's (^DJI) daylight savings being depleted 0.11% as markets endured their first weather-related shutdown for 27 years. (An unimaginably distant age, back when 8-bit computer consoles were all the rage.) ACCO Brands (ACCO), which makes those other '80′s icon Trapper Keepers - able to hold "binders full of women" - surged some 26.41%, which should please the top of the GOP ticket. Wisconsin native Paul Ryan, meanwhile, will espy a looming power shift in that state's Generac (GNRC) gaining 31.06% to the highest level in its history in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

Help For Homeowners

Everybody loves to read about what Ricky Martin, Dr. Phil, Mel Gibson, Hulk Hogan, Hilary Duff and Mark Wahlberg are all selling their houses for. Hint: If you're in the market for a piece of real estate from the rich and famous, ALL are selling their houses at a discount these days. Thank you, real estate bust.

The star-gazing is what makes websites like TMZ and others so popular.

When there's that much money involved, chances are the owners aren't doing their own yard work or plumbing. For the rest of us though, happily (or not so happily, depending on who you ask), there are also DIY shows to watch and emulate if we are so brave and crazy, or contractors to hire.

Water Flows Downhill (and Other Facts About Homeownership)

Filed under: House & Home, Insurance, Your Home

water damageDear Homeowner:

Water flows downhill and will always find its way to the lowest point in your house. (You might want to store that collection of Beanie Babies or Star Wars memorabilia off the floor – your insurance policy doesn't fully cover collectible merchandise).

I was standing on a friend's balcony this summer, looking out over all of the neatly subdivided yards, many of which were dotted with newly installed, pop-up swimming pools.

A lot of these pools are awfully cheap, price wise. I think you can get the whole kit for around $200 at certain points during the year. But they hold enormous amounts of water. What happens, I wondered, if some of them were defective or set up improperly? (I'm not sure I would want to be the next-door neighbor if that happened – a lot of the yards I was looking are really small. There isn't really anyplace for all of that water to go.)
