17 Ways to Cut Gas Costs

Sarah Gilbert

You've heard the (often conflicting) wisdom about saving money on gas: Turn off the AC (or don't). Fill your tires (just exactly enough). Drive more slowly (but not too slowly).

But the best way of all to save gas is simply to drive less. Sure, that's easy for me to say: I don't drive at all! But I know we can't all go cold turkey, so we polled our writers and friends for the best ways to cut back on driving without cutting it out of our lives altogether. Check out our 17 tips -- some really simple, some a little more of a commitment -- that can help you save some dough on gas.

It May Be OK to Use Regular Gas Instead of Premium

Do you drive a relatively new car that requires premium gasoline? Do you seethe every time you fill up, watching that extra dime or more flow into your tank with each litre? According to a new report from Edmunds.com, you may be able to burn regular gas in your premium car.

Philip Reed, Senior Consumer Advice Editor, and Jason Kavanagh, Edmund's Engineering Editor, recently wrote that the technology behind today's engines has actually reached the point that many of the vehicles that manufacturers suggest be fueled with premium gas can actually function quite well on regular. Thanks to the electronics in the ignition system, the engine can compensate for the lower octane.

Rate Hike Fears Ease On Shock Inflation Figures

A record low increase in core consumer prices was the last thing economists expected to see, especially given recent advances in the Canadian economy. However, a record low increase is what we got, taking the pressure off the Bank of Canada to raise interest rates anytime soon.

Core inflation -- a measure of the cost of living -- rose only 0.9% in the 12 months ended February, the lowest reading since records began in 1984. In fact, a reading that low would usually cause the Bank of Canada to lower interest rates to stimulate the economy and price increases.

jason toews of gasbuddy.caThe CBC is reporting that gasoline prices in various Canadian cities jumped overnight after oil prices hit a 2½-year peak amid unrest in Libya.

  • London, Ont. reported gas had climbed to $1.21.
  • Ottawa reports some consumers were paying $1.20.
  • In British Columbia, gas prices range from more than $1.25 per litre in many areas of Metro Vancouver to $1.08 or less in the Interior.
  • In the United States, gasoline prices increased nearly 33 cents in two weeks, the second-biggest two-week jump in the history of the gasoline market, according to a new survey of filling stations.

OPEC Members Think Oil Prices are Just Right; Consumers Beg to Differ

Filed under: Consumer Complaints, Family Finances

OPEC (the Organization of Oil Exporting Countries) announced yesterday that it saw no reason to increase its output of oil and would be maintaining its current quota levels. While the decision does not come as a surprise, it is disappointing to consumers feeling battered at the pumps. With prices ranging from $1.07 to $1.19 per litre across Canada this week, most of us are feeling the pinch of increasing oil prices. Particularly hard hit are U.S. consumers, many of whom are feeling the effects of a weak dollar and still-fragile economy.

Although OPEC delegates were in 100% agreement to maintain quota levels, member countries typically fall into one of two camps. Some member countries, including Venezuela, Algeria, Iran, and Libya, have been vocal about seeking the highest sustainable price for their oil. Algerian Energy and Mines Minister Youcef Yousfi publicly stated that he believes an oil price between US$80 and US$100 per barrel is ideal.

Nissan Leaf Electric Car Coming To Canada. Will It Save You Cash?

Filed under: Budgeting & Planning, Fashion & Trends, Saving, Technology, Going Green

It's been a long time since a fully electric car has held as much promise as the Nissan Leaf. In fact, the vehicle has been garnering solid reviews and appears so promising that some governments, municipalities and electricity companies are preparing to meet the Leaf's recharging needs, anticipating that it will be the first of many viable electric cars on the market.

The Leaf will be released in Vancouver, Canada toward the end of 2011 and rolled out in other provinces in 2012. Nissan hasn't released an official Canadian price for the vehicle as yet, but the car maker has released figures in U.S. dollars, allowing us to get a rough estimate of how much the electric car will cost consumers. The early verdict looks very positive.

Where To Park Your RV For Free

Filed under: Bargains, Budgeting & Planning, Economizer, House & Home, Travel

Recreational vehicles, more commonly known as RVs, camper vans or motorhomes, are becoming more popular by the year as vacationers look for more comfortable and affordable ways to travel. But between gas costs and camping fees, travelling by RV can sometimes cost more than you bargained for.

However, there are ways you can cut down on the cost of RVing by camping for free, or for a very low cost. In Canada, this means you will very likely be giving up a power hook-up for the night, so it's something you would probably only want to use every other night. But if your vacation takes you south of the border, there are quite a few opportunities to camp for free with power.

The website freecampgrounds.com is a great resource for tracking down a place to park your RV for free, or for under $10. It has an interactive map of the United States with listings of campsites and reviews. Many of the sites are free and some include power. The website also has a link to a forum where people can discuss places to camp for free in Canada, however, not many opportunities have been listed.

That is not to say that there are no opportunities in Canada to pull up the camper for a free night.
