This month we decided to try something a little more challenging: properties for sale for less than $100,000. It was difficult to find anything that inexpensive in hot markets like Toronto, but we did manage to find a house in Calgary (no land, it's yours to move) and a mobile home on a large lot in Victoria. Have a look and see what you think of our choices:
This TD infographic highlights just how much an average wedding costs the couple and their families. A venue has an average cost of $9,430 and if you get a deal, $6,000.

It might be a bit late for couples getting married this year, but if you're a bride or groom and you're looking for inexpensive venues for your day, there are several ways you can save money with an alternative venue.

They do take a a little creativity and asking around, but a unique venue can make your wedding that much more memorable for you and your guests. And remember to ask friends and family for suggestions: that uncle with a gorgeous old cottage might welcome the idea of hosting a family wedding.

That's according to Abigail R. Gehring's book, Odd Jobs: How To Have Fun and Make Money In A Bad Economy, an offering of more than 100 odds jobs if you want to make a buck or two without a long term commitment.

Many of these jobs are available by signing up with an agency that provides temporary employment. Once you're sign up, you are sent to odd jobs in your neighbourhood. When I did it, I sold Tupperware in a mall kiosk, picked up cardboard boxes in a Costco and spent a week putting different sizes of screws into really small bags.
Continue reading No Job Like An Odd Job: How To Make Extra Cash On The Side

No Job Like An Odd Job: How To Make Extra Cash On The Side originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Mon, 06 May 2013 15:55:00 EST.

Now you don't have to worry about those bank drafts thanks to Plastiq, an online-payment company that allows you to pay bills, including your taxes online. What makes it different is that Plastiq allows you to use your credit card at institutions that previously didn't accept cards such as private schools, colleges and government agencies. All you have to do is sign up on the Plastiq site, chose the institution, pay via credit card and be charged two per cent of your total amount in fees.

We've limited our picks to homes selling for less than $400,000, a bit more than the national average, which clocked in at $354,754 in January 2013, according to CREA, down 2% from a year earlier. And many of the properties we highlight this month are much less than that.
We've limited our picks to homes selling for less than $400,000, a bit more than the national average, which clocked in at $352,800 in December 2012, up 1.6% from a year earlier. And many of the properties we highlight this month are much less than that. "Ask her about the building." I was looking at condos and Pichut, a real estate agent with more than 30 years in the business, was urging me to talk to a tenant.

Most people looking at homes look at listings, recent selling prices and rely on their agent to inform their decisions. While this is smart, they're not getting all the information they need to make an informed choice. Without all the details, unwary buyers can find they've bought into a building with noisy, smelly neighbours and shoddy construction.

That's why Pichut is a big fan of talking to people in the building. "When looking at condo units, always approach any residents you encounter while walking about the premises," says Pichut. "They will give very honest opinions because they have nothing to hide." And along with condo owners and tenants, try to talk to the concierge or the super. They will be founts of information about the building. When I asked about their buildings, I was told about the demographics, which floor was the party floor and any rumours and complaints. Their information did play a role in the purchase of my condo.

So, what should you be asking? Click through our gallery for some key questions to put to the manager, and anyone else you run into while touring the building.

Here are five ways you can make sure they don't get filed away unused, or regifted to an unsuspecting friend:

Continue reading Five Things You Can Do With Unwanted Gifts

Five Things You Can Do With Unwanted Gifts originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Sat, 29 Dec 2012 11:52:00 EST. It's the time of year when we've opened our presents and are finalizing plans for New Year's Eve. While that's going on, some of us are indulging in old traditions that are supposed to bring good luck, love, prosperity and wealth into our lives for the new year.

Personally, it wouldn't be New Year's Eve if I didn't cook peas and rice and thoroughly clean my home. One friend of mine wears something yellow on December 31 for good luck, and another friend of mine buys grapes to eat on the stroke of midnight.

So if you're saving, paying down debt and looking after your retirement, a little tradition shouldn't do any harm. Most new year traditions focus on good luck which does include wealth but let's look at the traditions that focus exclusively on bringing wealth into the new year.
Continue reading New Year's Traditions That Bring Prosperity

New Year's Traditions That Bring Prosperity originally appeared on Walletpop Canada on Thu, 27 Dec 2012 08:00:00 EST.
