SLIDESHOW: Big Money Celebrity Break-Ups of 2012
- Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes
She tried. Xenu knows she tried. At the end of the day though, poor Katie may have felt there was no space left on Tom's floating city for her. After an elaborate get-away, Holmes left the worlds biggest movie star with a final divorce settlement estimated at only $4.8 million in child support over the next 12 years. Don't cry for the Dawson's Creek alum though -- she gets to keep millions in jewelery and presumably, the book advance for her life story will be significant.
- Katy Perry and Russell Brand
I think we all knew this one wasn't destined to last but it was fascinating and terrifying to witness. The singer/actress and funnyman/weirdo called it quits in February after about 14 months of marriage. With a net worth of about $45 million, according to Forbes, Perry has far more than her ex but reportedly he didn't ask for any extra funds from his former bride. Brand also reportedly gave Perry the $6.5 million Sunset Strip home the couple bought when they were together. Obviously Brand is banking on the fact there will always be casting calls for eccentric, British skeletal types.
- Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony
Somehow Marc Anthony keeps landing on his feet. He reportedly left Miss Universe for J-Lo and now he's with Venezuelan model Shannon de Lima. How does this happen for the skinny pop singer? Anyway, Anthony filed for divorce from Lopez earlier this year, reportedly for "irreconcilable differences." The Latin supercouple, who had twins together, have both been through divorce before. It's rumoured J-Lo decided to keep on as an American Idol judge over the objections of Mr. Anthony, although she has now stepped down from that role as well.
Who knows who's right in all of this but it would do Marc well to respect Jennifer's business decisions. She's reportedly worth over $250 million while Anthony is worth an estimated $40 million (he apparently did not seek spousal support from Lopez).
- Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson
OK, so they're reportedly on again. But are they? Or have they ever been together? For the sake of argument, let's say they were together and that Stewart's affair with her Snow White and the Huntsman director did derail their romance. Stewart reportedly earned about $34.5 million over the past year from her work on the Twilight Saga and -- yes -- her role in Snow White and the Huntsman. Pattinson came sort of close to that, earning a reported $26.5 million. There had been rumours of them moving in and out of the Bel-Air home they shared over this tumultuous period, and Stewart apparently confessed to living in a hotel room for a few nights. But I'm sure they both took comfort in knowing they're each worth about $30 million. It's not love but it is $30 million.
- Taylor Swift and Conor Kennedy
Taylor Swift is a talented singer and songwriter, a credible actress and even an effective Cover Girl cover girl. In the short time she's been famous, Swift has been romantically linked to Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner, John Mayer and Jake Gyllenhaal. Her quick-to-end relationships seem to work well for her career since she tends to write songs about her exes and then win countless Country Music Awards. Her latest hit We Are Never, Ever Getting Back together is no doubt thusly inspired. Her most recent reported break-up is with Conor Kennedy, grandson of the late Robert F. Kennedy. (Although rumour has it, the break-up was staged). Nevertheless, if Swift and Kennedy have broken up, or when the breakup does occur, it doesn't seem either will suffer too drastically. While Swift has an estimated net worth of $80 million, according to Forbes, Kennedy's familial wealth means he can insulate himself when she inevitably pens a Grammy-winning single detailing their relationship.
