The scent of sweet candy may be part of Halloween but that's not scary. Scary is the smell of mildew, rot and as Karpelman says, "the sweet, charred smell of [decomposition]."
You can recreate that smell by buying meat and letting it rot but that's going to be hard to get out of the house. Instead, why not try wet leaves for that authentic musty smell?
