Larry Ellison takes eighth place with a net worth of $37.2bn, earned from Oracle, the database management company he founded in 1977.

Charles and David Koch both feature in the top 10, each worth $38.6bn. The Koch family still own 84pc of the diversified business which has interests in manufacturing, refining and distribution of petrochemical products as well as chemical and finance arms.

Ingvar Kamprad has earned $41.8bn by founding furniture chain Ikea, but still drives a 1993 Volvo, flies economy class and encourages his employees to write on both sides of paper.

Amancio Ortega founded Spanish clothing seller Inditex which owns the Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Pull and Bear and Zara brands. Bloomberg Markets places his personal wealth at $53.6bn.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates retains a net worth of $64.4bn despite having given $28bn to the charity he set up with his wife Melinda. The couple eventually plan to give away 95pc of their fortune to charity.

Mexican Carlos Slim retains the title as the world's richest person, with holdings in telecommunications giant América Móvil making up most of his $77.5bn fortune.
